Q: Do they lock so that window can’t be opened ?

If you open window until restrictor clicks it can’t be opened anymore. You can’t close until you press the two release bottons together on side of restrictor. Restrictor can be unleashed to fully open window

Q: Can it be attached to the top of the window? Does it have to go on the bottom?

Most of the very useful catches are attached to the bottom of windows. We have attached one to the top of a door without problem. The thing you need to bear in mind is that you would need to reach the top of the window to operate it safely.

Q: Is this suitable for large square top hinged bottom opening upvc and would it stop the window self closing

Yes you can attach to the top, it probably would stop the window blowing closed.
