What size canvas will this easel hold?

It holds canvas up to 22.5" tall, which covers most 8x10, 12x12, 16x20 and 18x24 pieces. The base is 13" x 12", so very wide canvases can feel top-heavy. For anything bigger, a floor easel is the better fit.

Does it come assembled, and how small does it fold?

No assembly needed. It arrives folded flat at about 16.8" x 2.75", opens in seconds by pulling the third leg out, and the sliding guide sets the height anywhere from 11" to 22.5".

Will it slip or collapse while I'm painting?

At 0.9 lb, it can slide on glass or on a tilted desk. Keep it on a flat surface, and seat the height notch fully into its slot before you start - a half-seated notch is what lets the easel drop.

Will it hold a wood panel or a deep cradled board?

The bottom groove is made for canvas and thin frames, so stretched canvas and canvas panels sit well. Deep 1.5" cradled boards are too thick to sit securely - use a flat easel or H-frame for those.

Is it only a display stand, or can I actually paint on it?

Both. It works well for gouache, sketching and light acrylic. The angle is fixed fairly upright, so if you press hard with a brush or work on large canvases, an H-frame easel is steadier.
