How secure is the sheath?

very secure, the knife locks in tight

How secure is the sheath retention? is it strong enough to hold the knife in place without using the strap higher up on the sheath?

Fairly decent retention without the strap. I think you could reasonably expect it to remain sheathed while wearing without the handle strap.

does this knife rust quickly?

I've had mine for about 6 months now, and used it camping/cooking. Blade is still brand new. Honestly a better quality knife than I expected for the price point.
