The Modern Quilt Workshop: Patterns, Techniques, and Designs from the FunQuilts Studio

Didn't meet expectations.
Few of the quilts in this book qualify as "modern" to my eye. There are a 2-3 minimalist or gradient quilts that qualify and the rest are the sort of busy pastiche that drives me nuts. If you're looking for something like the top contemporary Japanese quilt patterns, color theory patterns, or minimalist patterns, I suggest you look elsewhere.I'm very glad I bought this used as I would have to return it had I paid full price. I may try one of the quilts, so the 6$ I paid is perhaps worth it.

For the "modern" quilt fan
I'm a "traditional" pattern fan, but I found a pattern called "Think Outside the Box" that is perfect for a niece's upcoming college graduation gift and the book gave me all the information I need to piece the quilt. I also found some good tips on a binding technique that should save me some time. Overall, the quilts aren't really my style, but for someone who likes this style of quilt, they're going to find it a good find to add to their quilting library. I think it's well written and will serve a "modern" quilt maker well.

Awesome book! I have a lot of quilt books
Awesome book! I have a lot of quilt books, but this one is concise and easy to understand without getting too detailed. I love the modern quilt patterns which are simple yet unique. But the best part of this book is the way they show how to use fabric color and patterns with many examples of different colors and hues and which ones work and which don't, but most importantly, WHY they don't work. I've already learned so much from this book and I've been quilting for 25 years. Great for the beginner or experienced quilter. A must have for anyone that enjoys modern quilting.

I recommend ordering the book instead of the Kindle version.
I really like the patterns and discussions of color. Had I realized that the charts with the cutting measurements would be so small and hard to read in the Kindle version, I would definitely have just ordered the book, but I was in a hurry to look at the quilts so I went ahead and ordered the Kindle version. When he's discussing a technique or one of the quilts and refers to another, it's hard to flip back and forth in a Kindle version too. Lesson learned, buy the book!! I love his quilts, and those of his wife also.

Great book for beginner/intermediate quilters!
This book has some pretty basic designs in it, but my favorite thing about it is that it shows people how to look at color and its impact on a design. Each quilt is depicted in several different color combos - vibrant colors, neutrals, opposites on the color wheel, pastels - which I think is super helpful for people who are just getting started in the quilting world. Having worked at a quilt shop, I found that a lot of people were really timid about choosing colors that they loved because they weren't sure how it would work out. This book really helps that aspect along, and has some really pretty patterns to boot. I definitely recommend this book!

do-able, even for beginners!
This book arranges projects in order of complexity, and even lists the skills you'll develop while making each project. Helpful, brief lessons on color theory and drawings of how choosing different color schemes changes the feel/mood of the entire quilt. Size charts make it easy to adapt each pattern to 4 different sizes (including napping, twin, etc). I made the "zipper" quilt 2 times for Christmas presents, with great results, simply by following the instructions in the book. I did not enjoy their one-step binding technique, though--I found it frustrating and ultimately have gone back to the traditional 2-step binding. Definitely stretched my idea of how a "quilt" should be designed--I'm not limited to traditional 6" or 9" blocks with a border anymore!

I finally got the pattern!
Good quilt book. I was looking for a specific pattern which was in this quilt. I was told it was out of publication - by the author! But I ordered it and got it. As it was, it was NOT the pattern that I wanted. But I was able to make the quilt by "tweaking" the pattern that is in this. There are probably a couple of other quilts I would want to make in this book.

GREAT book! :)
I got this book along with "Denyse Schmidt Quilts: 30 Colorful Quilt And Patchwork Patterns" and well honestly I got this book just for the free shipping. I can not believe it, I loved this book WAY more then the Denyse book (which I gave 2 stars). The Modern Quilt Workship is just a wealth of information. Great quilting tips, and just really neat projects with great instructions. I started quilting in december, taught myself, having never used a sewing machine before. I am very paticular and like very clear insutrctions. This book is GREAT, with totally ultra hip patterns to boot :) I learned stuff just skimming this book when it first arrived.

Great book
Great book with modern design appeal. Can easily be used as it is by following the clear instructions but can also be used as an inspiration for other quilts. A great addition to a quilting reference collection or a one off book.
