Works very well if used correctly
Love this tool! It works best if you apply the lines on a smooth flat surface. To make adjustments to get all pens working correctly, do this: pull the non-working pen out a little bit and turn it a quarter turn and push back in. Also apply even pressure when drawing the lines so that all 5 pins are touching the paper with the same pressure. While the width of the staff is about 7/16 of an inch you can make it smaller by turning the pen tilted to left or right to bring the lines closer together (requires a bit of practice). I have used this tool many years to take notes in all sorts of places and to write down little musical phrases as they occur. Good luck with your endeavors.

Stop complaining, people
It's a bit overpriced, but it works perfectly for me. I have friends who saw mine, bought their own and like other reviewers, began to complain about how crappy it worked, until I showed them otherwise. Once you figure out how to hold it, you don't need to apply a ridiculous amount of pressure as others claim. Hold it at a tilt, just as its held in the picture, and honestly it will work just as it should.

Cheaply and poorly designed. As others have said it's very hard to create 5 consistent lines. Also the pen I ordered appears to be used rather than new. Buyer beware.

Works very poorly
This is a great idea, but the pen performs very poorly. It requires quite a bit of effort to get five clear lines, one pen or the other is always going blank.

Great and very cool device
My boyfriend was going off to college to be a music major, so I got him this as a small parting gift. It is practical, easy to use, and very interesting- I'd never seen anything like it before and neither had he. Great for any musician who doesn't carry around music paper. The only bad thing about it is how expensive ink refills are, because you have to replace all the ink wells at once. However, overall it is a fabulous item and a cool gift.

Pretty cool thing
This instrument is a “must have “ for all music instructors. With this, I get less stuff to my school and private lessons.

It writes when it wants to.
Making your on staff paper in the fly is great but this pen is frustrating. When it works it’s great but the issue lies with the quality of the pen. If they used gel instead of ballpoint then the value is wonderful. It hard starts and it’s random which tip it is. You would ALWAYS have to do a trial beforehand because you don’t know which tip won’t write. Frustrating!!!

A great gift!
I got this for my son and he loves it. It was imported from japan, and actually came wrapped in japanese newspaper, which was pretty neat. I definitely recommend this product to anybody interested in music.
