I read this to kids when they were young and just recently one of my daughters in her late teens asked where this book was because she still loves the story. A story of two sisters with very different characters and - well, no spoilers here. Read it.

This charming story reads like a folktale. It is set in Africa so quite different from the US. The moral that beauty without kindness and compassion is worthless

I remember reading this book as a little girI. I also heard it on Reading Rainbow. Thanks Reading Rainbow! I just had to buy it for my daughter. Great story. Great message. I hope she enjoys it as much as i.It is a bit advanced for her, so I will read it to her and we discuss what is happening and what she thinks.
