Strong Verbs for Fiction Writers (Indie Author Resources)

Great book, so helpful for writing!

It has a good selection of strong verbs, but is kind of sporadically organized.

I've been writing all my life but, only recently, have I decided to learn as much as possible about the industry and make a profession. I'm not one of those that wrote a book and think "omg, I am totally going to be an instant hit author". I'm realistic. I'm learning and know it's going to take time even after writing, rewriting and editing probably 100x's both the series I've been working on. I'm explaining all this because, in my life, I've learned an INCREDIBLY valuable lesson: Any even little help in the right direction should be appreciated and honored. It took 14yrs to get the dream job I have now. Hopefully, it won't take that long to become a successful author, but if it does, so be it. I made one dream come true, why can't I work towards the original one?Okay, after all that, I LOVE that Mrs. Howard came up with this concept. I'm running through one of my series with the book at my side tweaking weak verbs. Granted, I do own thesauruses (yes, plural...I'm a nerd), this is still helping this writer find "just the right verb" 70% of the time.If Mrs. Howard ever decides to do a 2.0 of this book, I would be MORE than willing to collaborate on this. Maybe between the two of us, we could make it 5,000.Thank you, Mrs. Howard for creating this awesome resource.

This book is a POWERHOUSE that will slow yo down and help you in a very fast fashion to polish your novels. Just search on very common verbs and see how top-heavy your novels are with a common verb and just turn the page to a list of substitutions. I love this book. Bravo to Valerie Howard for creating this wonderful tool.I can't wait to get my next one, character reactions. No more countless he said tags. I get so focused on writing, that I forget to add flavor and tone and behavioral hints to my characters. Thanking you in advance, Valerie Howard. One smart young lady !!!

I have been using this book when I am writing.

I like this book. Very helpful if you’re a writer and looking for more words to use than the average.Only four stars because a page feel out when I opened and skimmed through it.

That way when I find strong verbs I like I can add them to the meager lists in the book. It's a neat idea, and some day it may become one of my favorite reference books. I go looking for something, and when I don't find it in the book I draw a line. Then I go to the thesaurus. was hoping it would save me time, and when I accumulate longer lists, it will.

Having bought the Emotional Thesaurus by another author which I find very useful, I thought I would invest in 1000 Character Reactions and 1000 Strong Verbs by Ms Howard. Unfortunately the fact that there is no means of clicking back to an index from each heading renders the book totally useless. Unless you have the time to flick right back to the beginning each time, from where you can dive to the page you want. For me, it's not worth the paper it isn't written on. It is also very sparse. A basic Thesaurus would find all these words in the click of a mouse. Very disappointing.

I like this book, it is useful when you want to use a more specific, strong verb. Could contain a little more, hopefully there will be more editions with additional verbs, but it does what it says.

Another compact book by this author.A useful tool when you're stuck and trying to choose a strong verb instead of a weaker choice.The words are listed alphabetically, and for certain word there's sub-categories of words for intensity or depth as an example.

When looking for a strong verb for your writing, this is the book for you. It's a useful store of words to strengthen your prose. I only wish that it was longer with more examnples but having said that it's a good book.

Does what it says it will do.Delivers.I just wish it was more than just a list of verbs: maybe add some exercises or examples within context apart from the weak introduction.
