Hi it’s a bit of cardboard that’s held in place by wires. Good trick when buying these and lighting them is to light the square bit and the hold the top of the Chinese balloon outside and let the heat flow around the inside. And slowly run with it or walk and let it go. Nope this help. Use a lighter to the the square middle as it’s easier but these lanterns go really high in the sky
