what is the shelf life for ink cartridge

I loaded the first ink cartridge into my Canon photo printer and it said the ink cartridge was empty!! I reset the printer reloaded the cartridge a number of times, but it still said the cartridge was empty. So I thought perhaps the cartridge was defective and tried the second cartridge in the two pack. Same result after multiple tries. DON'T GET FOOLED BY THIS SCAM!!
