Great for beginner wood carvers
This is a great kit for beginners who want to get into whittling or wood carving. It comes with everything you need to get started. It comes with knife, two blocks of wood of different hardnesses, leather strop, polishing compound, three different grits of sandpaper, cut resistant tape, bees wax, ruler, two stencil patterns and some bandaids. The directions that come with it are very basic. There is a QR code on the instructions that brings you to a little how to video that shows you the different knife cuts. What I didn’t like is there is nothing that tells you what species each block of wood is. After finding another how to video on YouTube posted by someone was I able to figure out that one block is basswood and the other is cherry. The lighter block is the basswood, which is the easier one to carve. That’s the practice block. The cherry is for the finished piece. The other thing I wish they had more info on was how to strop the knife blade. I had to look up more information on that as well. The booklet and online said to use the blue cut resistant tape but mine came with pink tape. Not a big deal but some people might get confused by that.Otherwise, this is a great way to get started in wood carving without having to buy a whole bunch of individual things. I am happy with the purchase and would definitely recommend it to someone wanting to get started in wood carving.

Awesome carving kit with a nice knife
This kit is a lot of fun. It came with two blocks of wood. One Basswood the other Cherry. The Cherry is hard it was the first one I carved into a bird. Once you put the paper bird on with glue, it helps to saw off any excess. I love the knife. With a little touch up on the strop to keep it sharp ,It cuts good . I like the wax that came with the kit . It makes the Cherry bird that I carved look real nice. Now I am going to have to carve the other block . The sandpaper that came with it works very good. Every thing you get in the kit is a good value for what I paid. Very durable and tuff knife.

Hard wood
Why did you pick this product vs others?:The kit is nice but the wood is hard, it takes a lot of strength as an adult to carve it, I have used a serrated saw to start it. I would not recommend for a kid.

Nice for Beginners
Kit came as described. I liked that it had 2 different types of wood. One is definitely easier to cut. Spray the other with alcohol and water mixture to soften the wood. Spray often is what I've been told to do from various whittling groups.Used the finger tape, as the knife was just a bit too big for my small 65-year-old hands. Cuts happen. It's part of whittling but can be reduced with gloves and tape together. Happy it came with beeswax and sandpaper. Nothing else you need to buy, except maybe gloves. My bird doesn't look exactly as it is pictured, but every piece will be unique, as no two people whittle the same. Overall, instructions were good and gives a person a try to see if they like to whittle.
