excellent mat cutter
It is an excellent mat cutter for 8 ply cardboard. It is made of metal. Changing blade is easy and quick. It makes cuts clear and accurate.

Good mat cutter
I purchased this mat cutter from Amazon because they had a much better price than a local store. It is the same thing and it works exactly the way you want it to, cutting your mat angle just perfect, take my word for it and get one if you are into making your own mats with the Logan system.

Disappointing
Let me start with some self-criticism. I definitely underestimated cutting 8-ply boards...However this cutter even made more challenging than necessary. Had all kind of issues and it took me some time till being able to cut a side straight and in one run. But for a successful cut you need to be able to cut all four sides...I wasted a couple of board and still struggling. Couple of things: * The cutter has 2 lines (a green one and a red one). I am unclear which one to use when starting a cut as both seem to start the cut too early or too long. * Mine didnt have the light. * Knife blades are wasted very fast. Couple bended, couple broke etc. * You need serious power to cut. Especially because you have to put a board underneath because my cutting board doesnt support the depth and angle of the 8-ply blade. Basically it has double resistance. (see the update, i now know why this happened) * It took me some time to find the right depth. Wasted over $50 in boards with miscuts, even after practicing..... UPDATE (11/15): Ok a couple of days after making this review and a bit more practice plus seeing a video of Logan how to use this cutter the following: * I understand now that the depth of the blade is very important/more important than i thought. When you put it too deep, you risk that it will cut too far in at the corners. It should just pass the mat. Took me some time to figure that out and a couple of tries to find the right 'depth' * The cutter has a red line and a green line. You are suppose to align the green line at where you want to start your cut and stop the cut when the red line is aligned. With the right depth of your blade this works well. * You need to put a 4ply thick carton/mat under the mat that you are cutting. If you dont do this, the blade will cut into your cutting board because of the angle and depth of the blade. And when this happens, you'll damage your board but also the cutting will be cost more strength. I had a piece of 8 ply mat under the mat that i was cutting but that was too high for my cutting board. I updated my rating to 3 stars. Not 4 or 5 because Logan could just do a bit of a better job in explaining and the cutter is just not as straightforward as i thought. Everybody that wants to use this product should watch the YouTube video mandatory!

Practice and it's great!
I am an artist with some experience making mats and frames. I wanted to save money on frames for a show so I set out to frame all 23 pieces myself. Due to an over-sight on my part I purchased 8ply mat board instead of 6ply, so I had to purchase this to cut my mats. Like any mat cutter YOU HAVE TO GET USED TO IT before you can cut precise windows. The stop/start marks are really more like guidelines that can change depending on a number of factors like how much blade is exposed, what brand mat you're cutting etc... I had to cut several practice mats before I was able to figure out where my start/stop marks actually were. Once I had it figured out cutting my mats was pretty streamlined. NOTE: Buy extra blades!!!!! You have to change the blades often to get clean cuts. I changed the blade every three or four mats to be certain.

Worked perfect
I have been a fine art photographer for many years and I do all of my own mating and framing I used the logan 5000 mat cutter for the first time and it worked perfect I was reading the other peoples reviews it sounded like most people had difficulty I did not have this problem I made sure that I used blade # 271 and made sure that the depth was set right and the 5000 cut the 8 ply like butter.

Great
I’ve had a few Logan mat cutters over the years and this is the easiest to use as the design has improved. It includes the plastic guides which fit over my Logan mat cutter.

Used items sold as new
Item arrived in clearly used condition, scratched and marked (see pic), with a sticky goo on one of the buttons. I tried to return it but before it was picked up I noticed the price had gone from 54 to 70, so I quickly cancelled the return and will have to live with this old, used item. Very disappointing, Amazon! The 271 blades can be resharpened and reused for a long time using an angle of 12.5° on a Work Sharp (fine grit belt) or even just an Arkansas stone.
