even though i absolutely love this movie, this dvd was pretty much crap, it would not play in my dvd player because of some code region, i looked it up and it said something like it was only for german or something like that, Anyways i had to send it back. Don't understand why i would get a dvd like that.

The Color Purple
The DVD came, but it was in the wrong area (UK instead of USA). I thought if I had a Blue-Rey DVD Player I could watch DVD's from the UK area. I was wrong! I tried to return it. The supplier would accept it back, but would not pay for the return charges. So I just threw the DVD away.

Concerned
This is 1 of those "must have" films that needed a home in my dvd collection.I've seen the film and now I have the book - getting a copy of the dvd was my next move... brilliant!Though I bought this last year August '18, I watched it for the first time last night... it's great.Amendment: initially, I thought there was only half the film n was a little peeved that I wasn't able to send it back. It turns out that, the 2nd part of the film is on the reverse of the disc... however this information was not included in the packaging!

Not the book, but good all the same
When I chose this, I knew it wouldn't be the same as the book, but I was hoping it was closely followed. For me it wasn't, but the end result is a great, heart-warming film you should have in your collection. The book is fantastic and I think it should be read as well as watching the film, to fill in what I feel would be gaps in character. The good: Goldberg is a great Celie, and Sofia is billed perfectly. The end is a lovely scene with tears all around I should think. A softer Mr. ____ makes it easier to endear him since his actions were less callous and hurtful to his wife. From the book, though I knew Celie was young, she is mature, making me forget she is still a teenager for a long time; seeing it definitely helps you to feel more sympathy, being a wife at such a young age.The bad: The image of Shug I had in my head was rather different and Mr. ____ is for me, not cruel enough to truly show just how hard Celie's life has been. Celie's sexuality is by and large left alone, leaving a bit of a hole in her character, also making it seem she is close to Shug for no reason other than her kindness. I know, its not the book, but this is how I know the story and it fits together better with these pieces of information. But worth a watch and not to be shunned despite its detour away from the text. Watch just for the small victories Celie gets and relishes them, coy smile on her face.

The worst of family life in the American south.
I first saw this film some years ago. I was with a friend and it was her copy. One of her favourite films. She was mesmorised by it and shed several tears as we watched the story unfold. What a story it is. Set in the American south among farming folk. It is a story of many forms of domestic violence. Man's domination physically and mentally over women. Because of their superior size and strength. Life was very hard for them but this was not the way to cope with it. The film also shows many weaknesses and much humanity in some of the characters. It is very powerful and although there are glimmers of happiness and hope: for me, my emotions are totally involved in the compassion I feel for the heroine. It was Whoopi Goldberg's first film. She gives an extraordinarily complete performance for one so young. If it was made now it would be her name above the title. It is an epic and is still an important film. I find it very humbling.

Rip off
I note that other people on here are also saying that only 1hr 15mins of the film are actuallyon the disk. This is a rip off and the people who sell these disks should be banned from selling onamazon.I too finally tried to watch the film several months after the purchase,so I can't send it back.

Bittersweet
Whoopi Goldberg really lifted this film up, it could've been unbearable if not for her - her childhood experiences were that harsh and sad. There is a believable chemistry between the characters and there was never any boring moments. Whoopi was absolutely charming, this is the best role I've ever seen her in.. Her character is so likable you just wish she never had to endure any pain.Worth watching but be prepared, it is harrowing, especially the first 30 minutes.. Its not until Whoopie steps in to play the adult Celie that I started to feel some positivity and hope
