Wacky Hijinks Mostly Still, But Actually Some Movements in the Overall Plots As Well As Some Character Development
The antics of the characters in *Nisekoi* can sometimes be a bit aggravating. While I do enjoy the manga and the situations are funny, the general snail's pace of the actual overall plot is not as much fun. It is, in fact, one of the otherwise fun series' few low points. This volume sees the plot actually progress a little further as not only do Raku and Chitoge grow a bit closer, or at least have their closeness manifest more, but other characters have development and Haru finds out the secret of the "fake" relationship. All of this happened on a backdrop of the usual hijinks the gang find themselves in. Of course, the main question of who the heck Raku made his promise with as a kid is no closer to being solved. I mean, yes, the previous volumes have shed some light on how wide the candidates can be, and that there are some wrinkles in this story, but we still don't know who?! Aargh! The slow pace - glacial pace, really - of the narrative can be annoying, as I stated earlier. The saving grace that keeps it from being so are mainly three factors. First of all, the comedy is funny to read. Though sometimes it does descend into cringe comedy levels, which I overall don't have much of a liking towards, it is generally quite amusing.Secondly and thirdly are kind of tied into each other. The characterization, though superficial at times, can also be at other times quite complex. Yes, the characters will be simple for a good joke or gag, but when the story needs it, or to show a moment that is heartwarming, tearjerking, awesome, so on, the mangaka will show that he can do complicated characters too. This gets to the related third part, the sense of heartwarming camaraderie and true companions the characters have. At first some of these characters didn't get along well, and to some extent, some still don't. Despite this, there is the sense that they do, in fact, care for, and look out for, each other. It's not the romantic escapades going on in this story here that make it worthwhile for me to read, but the stories and such of friendship. The art is still both limited and gorgeous. The author isn't good at differentiating between faces for his characters, so that hair, clothes, so on, are how they are told apart. He *is*, however, able to put in enough details to make the art still look quite good, and the characters very pleasant to the eye.If you want a tightly-plotted tale of romance, this isn't the manga for you. But if you don't mind a sweet romantic story with lots of comedic hijinks and slice of life moments, this is a great series.Rating: 4/5 Stars.

A Collection of Short Stories
Nisekoi, Vol. 12: Festival has a lot of things going on. Tsegumi has eaten a poisoned candy that makes her as weak as a kitten. How can she protect Chitoge now? Chitoge thinks about confessing her feelings to Raku. Will she? The Onodera family's confectionery shop has a new competitor, and Raku is working for them. Can they compete, and why is Raku apparently turning on the one girl he loves? There is no overall arc in this story, and it's more a collection of short storiesWord on the street is that this is a weaker volume, but here's what that translates to: no character arcs, and the five or six girls who all love Raku will continue their Platonic relationships with him, although this is going to change eventually, I hope. That being said, of the nine stories, about three are stinkers, and the other six are good. I enjoyed this volume, despite all the flack I get from my friends for reading this series. This volume is terrifically easy to read. Even the weaker stories at least go by rather quickly. Recommended. ****

Filler, filler and more filler.
We've gotten into THAT part of the series. Jump subscribers, you know what I'm talking about. The part with nonstop, aggressive filler. All nine chapters in this volume consist of filler content that doesn't advance the story even a little. Heck, they're not even filler ARCS. They're all standalone chapters. The artwork is good, and Komi is decent at writing filler stories, but the series is at its best when it has a plot. In the grand scheme of the series, this volume is perfectly skippable. I'm only giving it three stars because of the quality of the artwork and because Marika is best girl. From what I recall, the story doesn't pick up again until volume fifteen or so. In short, even fans of the series don't need to buy this volume. It adds absolutely nothing to the story.

~4/5This series is just fun. There’s no end in sight, surely, and none of the romances are going anywhere soon. But it’s so fun. The characters are so well-done and likeable, and the comedy is golden.Raku actually takes a backseat a couple of times in this volume. He gets a lot of time in several of them, yeah. Like when Sugumi accidentally takes a developing drug that makes her unable to fight, or when he goes on a date with Chitoge and she freaks out over the idea of confessing her feelings to him, and when a mob guy in his family opens a confections shop across from Onodera’s. But there’s also a full chapter for Ruri and her swimming competition, when she gets hurt and realizes how important her friends are. And when Paula has to face her fears, including one of getting shots.I mean, there are true moments where we see that Shu has been watching Ruri so closely he’s the only one who knows that she’s injured. And that Sugumi really does mean a lot to Chitoge, even more than Sugumi realized. We see how important Chitoge’s ribbon really is to her when she loses it. And Haru’s feelings for Raku start showing themselves, even if she denies it.There’s so much happening in this series, so much subtle and not-subtle character development. I would really like a couple more guys to show up, as the guy-to-girl ratio is getting way too uneven, but otherwise, I have no faults with this series. I just love it.A review copy was provided by the publisher, VIZ Media, for an honest review. Thank you so, so much![More of my reviews are available on my blog, Geeky Reading, to which there's a link on my profile.]

My favorite so far
One of the best tankobon so far, in my opinion. Chitoge, Tsugumi, Tachibana, Haru, Onodera, all the girls have their own stories and all episodes are absolutely lovely. You could probably say the main story is not going forward at all, but the longer we can read nisekoi the better.
