We make the products in Ohio. Burlap, or more widely known around the world as hessian, is made from the jute plant in India. It's India's #1 crop. All of our burlap is untreated; however, oils are used during the looming process of all burlap, so that's where the smell can come from. Sometimes there is a smell and sometimes there isn't; it just depends on the type of oil used during the looming process. Our garden fabric includes burlap of 3 different weights. We sell true garden fabric, which is a lighter weight burlap, and we also include our medium and heavy-weight burlap that has seams and/or ink markings on the fabric in the garden category, so there's no way for us to pick one over the other if you order this specific item since Amazon fulfills the orders on our behalf. While we do our best to minimize selling burlap that has an odor, there's no way to say whether or not any of the burlap has an odor because it varies from lot-to-lot and piece-to-piece. What is the best way to sew seams in this with a sewing machine (not a serger)?

Pull threads to get straight seams, both directions. Sew with heavy duty needle, and thicker tread ( upolstery). I used hot glue, to stop fraying. I made Christmas deco, table runners, drawer liners, rustic decor. Good Luck.
