LiftMaster 850LM Universal Gate and Garage Door Opener Receiver

This receiver was a great value for the money. The instructions provided easy installation and therefore functionality. The connectivity was perfect and now my garage door opens like new. I highly recommend this item.

These are great because you can actually hook them up to your older garage doors. I went to local hardware store and got some simple wire and hooked them up myself. They come with Velcro stickies so that you can stick them to surfaces such as your garage door opener. I have 3 garage doors and a gate and hooked them up to all so that I could use the same remote. Here's the story on how that happened. One thing to note is that the 850LM is NOT backwards compatible with some older Liftmaster garage door openers. I learned of this the frustrating way when I hired a guy to come out and fix my RV gate remote opener. It was not opening or responding to the remote. Annoying right? So he comes out and fixes it by installing an 850LM to my gate motor. Problem solved, you might think? After he left I went to program my other doors to the Liftmaster garage door remote he handed me, I found out this Liftmaster 850LM was NOT compatible with my 3 other Liftmaster garage door openers, even though they may be about 20-25 years old and even though they are a Liftmaster product. You would think the company would have the sense to make their products work together. I didn't want to have a separate remote for my gate and a separate remote for my 3 garage doors, so the solution was to buy 3 more of the 850LM and mount them and hook them up to the older generation garage doors. It cost me for the 3 extra 850LM units and then even more for several new remotes. I also had to buy AC power adaptors for each and since I couldn't find one on Amazon I bought one of those universal 34 piece power adaptor sets. Thankfully one of them worked and now I have 33 extra tips should I ever need them. I hope my experience helps out a homeowner that may be having the same issues. My older garage door openers were starting to have range issues (click the button ten times while you're in your own driveway until it finally opens) and this 850LM has seemed to be a huge improvement so far. They were simple and easy to wire, set up, and program. It would have been nice if they had included the power cord.

Saved me hundreds of dollars. The receiver on my garage door opener stopped working. The button on the wall still worked but none of my remotes did. Instead of buying a new opener or a circuit board, I bought this receiver. Voila, my garage door is working again and with better range! Reminder, it does not come with a power supply. You need to buy one separately, 12-24v AC or DC. I had saved an old one from a wifi router I threw away yrs ago.

My garage door opener used dip switches to set a security code that matches the code that was set on the remote controls. A long time ago when they were originally sold, that was okay because the likelihood of interception was low and computers were too slow to accomplish a "brute force" password attack (trying every possible number combination until it finds one that works) in a reasonable amount of time. Now computers are fast enough that a handheld computer (like a cellphone, Raspberry Pi, etc) with the proper radio transmitter could force a dip switch door to open in a few minutes. Which means that dip switch garage openers are not secure at all. The solution is "rolling code." More complex passwords that periodically change automatically, and the remotes stay individually linked to the opener even while the password is changing. The 850LM is a rolling code radio receiver meant to replace your door/gate opener's original radio receiver. Physical installation of the 850LM is reasonably easy. I used the included velcro strips to set the receiver (it's about the size of a hamburger) on top of the opener and connected a wire (not included) between the receiver and the door opener's wall button terminals. I tried to use another wire to draw power from the door opener, but I couldn't get that to work so I used a Radio Shack selectable voltage power supply instead. Liftmaster sells a power supply that fits the 850LM. But the receiver accepts anywhere between 9v and 30v AC or DC for power, so you have a lot of options (as long as the plug fits) if you need a power supply and don't want to buy one from LM. The instructions said that cutting off the dangling wire antenna would disable the garage door opener's old radio receiver, but that didn't work at all. I cut the old antenna off, then tested the old remotes, and they still worked! Which I definitely did not want since I was trying to replace the old receiver with a new more secure one. Ultimately I had to take the cover off of the rear (motor) side of the garage opener and unplug the old dip switch radio receiver (a small circuit board) from the motor to completely deactivate it. That shut down the old insecure dip switch system for good and the old remotes no longer worked (which was my goal). The nice thing about the 850LM's antenna is that it attaches to the receiver with the exact same type of screw-on plug that's used for cable TV. Which means that you can also use a coaxial TV cable (along with a small coaxial extension adapter) to place the antenna wherever you want. I was worried that I might get bad reception with the new antenna placed directly on the receiver and the garage opener, so I used a coaxial cable to place the antenna further away from the motor, closer to the driveway, and higher up. I have not used the 850LM enough to say whether the reception distance is any better or worse than the old dip switch receiver, but so far it does work reliably with a new set of compatible remotes and I haven't had any instances where it completely failed to detect the button presses of my remotes (which was a problem that happened intermittently with the old dip switch receiver even when I was right outside of the door).

The power adapter is a separate purchase. You also need to buy 18 to 22 gauge wire. I got mine from Lowe's for $6. Sadly the power adapter was slightly too short, so I installed it on a subpar location. The LiftMaster 850LM does work, but more consistently with closing the garage. Opening the garage from outside is the issue. I'd say 1 out of 10 times, it opens the garage. The installation is a lot simpler than I thought. Disconnect the garage opener from its power source. Cut wires about a foot or so long, leaving an inch of the metal exposed. Loosen the bolts on both the garage opener and this product. Stick the wire into the LiftMaster screws accordingly. Wrap the other end of the wire into the garage opener accordingly. Tighten the screws. Plant the adhesives to a convenient location, preferably away from the chains. On your LiftMaster remote, remove the metal hook and click the center button to activate it so to speak, then press the receiver on your original garage door opener to connect the product. One caveat in my experience is that only one remote can be connected to the LiftMaster 850LM. I don't know if that is the norm or if I got a lemon (also a separate purchase). I got mine from Garage Stop (2X for LiftMaster Chamberlain Craftsman Universal Garage Door Opener Remote Replacement).

I bought an 850LM to solve a reliability/spotty coverage problem with the receiver built into my circa 2002 Chamberlain Model 8220 garage door opener. Using the Homelink built into our 2017 RAV-4, sometimes the remote wouldn't trigger from the driveway, but other times it would trigger fine from three houses down the street. It took a couple tries to get a good configuration. The easiest install method is to power the 850LM from the existing garage door opener. I could not find an explicit opener/850LM compatibilty guide. You will need some hookup wire and wire nuts to splice in. The voltage levels looked OK, but 850LM respond to its buttons after I powered up. I disconnected the power wires and plugged in a wall plug power supply from some computer peripheral. There's an input power jack on the 850LM, so no additional wiring or splciing required. You can also buy a Chamberlain wall plug specifically designed for the purpose. You will also need some wire to connect the 850LM Normally Open (NO) relay to the NO terminals of the garage door opener. Basically the garage door opener thinks the 850LM is just another doorbell-type switch. You can place as many doorbell swithes in parallel as you desire. The terminal space on my garage door opener was pretty crowded, so a little bit of splicing and wire nuts were called for again. Follow the internet instructions on setting up Homelink. To do it right, you need at least one additional remote (811M for example) to train you in-car Homelink transmitter. After completing the installation, my RAV-4 still had inconsistent spots in receiver coverge. Unlike the original garage opener receiver and antenna, the 850LM has a nice F-style antenna connector allowing you to remotely place the receiver antenna for better range. You'll need some TV cable with F-connectors and a F-union to connect the 850LM antenna to the end of the extending cable. After these tweaks, the 850LM is now working well, with good range and no need to disturb operation of the previous system. In addition to what was in the 850LM box, the job needed hookup wire, wire nuts, television cable, an F-type union connector, and an 811M remote. I would still consider this an easy installation job once you have the parts on hand.

Helped fix an issue where my remotes didn't work (radio on the logic board failed) but everything else was working properly. You need to check compatibility with your remote, I had to buy new ones (existing remotes didn't pair). Very simple instructions for my single opener application. You also need a power supply and some wiring to use as your jumpers. I used 22 AWG because that's what I had in the garage.

LiftMaster offers zero support to homeowner end users. They will not even answer a simple question. Instead, you are referred to a list of their registered installers. So any savings of doing it yourself is out the windoow. This of course is their perogative and I personally ok with it. My issue is that there was no warning when purchasing the part, not in the product discription, not on the box and not in the included instructions. So buyer beware!!!!!😒
