Good old movie.

Great movie.

I already had a copy of Assassins and I wanted to get this VHS for a friend of mine. I first got Assassins because I had liked some of Antonio Banderas's movies, I was less familiar with Sylvester Stallone but I was trying to add to my Stallone collection and when I saw they were in a movie together I thought that would be cool. Some people may have a problem with playing a murderer who feels sad aboout killing people, because the question arises 'Well, if he feels sad about killing people and is heavy-hearted with guilt, then why does he continue killing people?' but I found Stallone's character completely believable. I liked it when he's on the computer writing to his boss and everything Stallone says out loud is the opposite of what he's writing in response to his boss's questions. I understood the idea of needing to get a stash of money before you break out on your own (I know how that feels) and though I've never killed a person, I know what it's like to be doing something because I *have* to, even if I'm against it. It's likely that the boss would have killed Stallone if Stallone ever outright refused an assignment or told the boss he wanted to quit. Though on the surface that's selfish, to kill people to protect yourself, the character did truly want to start a new life of helping people instead of killing them. When he starts protecting the woman he was suppossed to kill, you can see signs that he really is a good guy in spite of his past deeds. Even though in reality I wouldn't trust an assassin around me and I wouldn't relax around one, Stallone made me feel that I would trust his character as a friend if I ran into him. I found a lot of warmth in Stallone's performance. And the story about killing his own best friend and having to live with it for 15 years resonated with me because I had more than once been the cause of death for some animal friends of mine(not like deliberately shooting them, but just being responsible for their deaths) and the movie made me feel that the director Richard Donner would forgive me (if he knew me) for causing my own animals' deaths if he believed that I really did love them and that I really am sorry they died. The thing that made me love this movie is that it ends with Stallone and the woman both getting to leave their pasts behind and walk out the door to start a new life, with new names and everything--they really were gonna get to start over and not let their pasts control their lives. I saw the movie at a time when I myself was desperately needing to believe that. So Richard Donner became my hero for directing this movie. I'd never before been as grateful for any movie as I was for Assassins. And Antonio Banderas--the extraordinary comedy he gives this movie is the perfect component to balance out the heavy emotional story and I think this was probably the greatest performance Antonio Banderas ever gave in his entire career. The most hilarious movie villian I've ever seen. I'd rather watch Banderas in this than any of his "good guy" roles. I didn't know much about Brian Helgeland before I saw Assassins, and I don't know how much of the movie was written by Brian Helgeland since there was more than one writer, but I immediately thought that whoever wrote Assassins must be a genuis and I have since watched more of Brian Helgeland's work and I love it all. Helgeland seems to have a love and fascination for dark subjects (by dark I just mean, not wholesome movies)and this movie...I've never seen a better example of making a great movie out of a dark subject matter. I'm grateful to everyone who made Assassins. This is still my favorite Richard Donner movie.

I absolutely love this action packed movie! I can watch it over and over again!

Not an amazing film; but for fans of "just let it be entertainment" 90's action- it's a classic!The ballistics are complete insanity (in a fun way).The tech points are incredibly dated (but I'm a charming way)And the cast's skill level FAR exceeds the call of the script.Worth the watch.(Worth writing a review for)

Wanted a walk down memory lane, its a good movie.

Case, Disc and artwork: A+ this old movie looks cool in this upgrade version. This movie I had loved back in the day of the VHS era. Now exploring this new age is awesome. A fantastic storyline with an assemble cast featuring Stallone, Banderas, and Moore. Some great action scenes. This blu ray lacks any special features but a Trailer. Just having this movie on an upgrade format is one of the best thing on its own. I highly recommend this movie for anyone live action movies.

I saw this years ago and loved it. I love the banter between Banderas and Stallone. Banderas is an "up-and-coming" punk assassin and wants to prove to himself that he is number 1. Stallone is "old school" and the current number 1. He has ethics... if there is such a thing with assassins. But Stallone wants out. The past and the things he as done haunt him. But now he has a new problem.... Banderas keeps taking his contracts and then tries to kill him.Now... its survival of the "best". Julianne Moore is a quirky "mark" who gets caught in the middle of an elaborate chess game. Her and Stallone bond under unusual circumstances. He helps keep her alive, and they become partners in this adventure/thriller.The technology is old... DOS computers, but you can see how it all fits... and I'm sure it was advanced for its time.The ending is really good! Combining the old past(back flashes) with the current situation. Watch the details.If you like Stallone and Banderas... you will love this film.Another one I like is "The Specialist" with Stallone and Sharon Stone... same genre.

Uno di quei film che, insieme a Tango e Cash o Atto fi Forza, rappresentano quel cinema americano anni '80/90 che vedevo con i nonni. Rivederlo é sempre un piacevole tuffo nel passato. L'edizione include ovviamente l'audio italiano.

Face the truth: this movie jus didn't take off at all. The plot idea was good, but the stupidity of the scenes are disgusting.

Robert Rath aus Portland ist Auftragsmörder und gilt als die Nummer eins in seiner Branche. Seine Auftraggeber kennt er nicht persönlich, er erhält seine Aufträge und die Angaben zur Zielperson stets anonym über das Internet. Seit 15 Jahren plagen ihn jedoch Schuldgefühle, weil er damals den Auftrag erhielt, seinen Kollegen und Freund Nicolai zu töten, was er mit einem gezielten Schuss ins Herz erledigte.Rath will aussteigen und seine Laufbahn als Auftragsmörder beenden. Er nimmt jedoch noch einen Auftrag an: Er soll für 200.000 US-Dollar den Milliardär Alan Branch töten, dem Geldwäsche, Drogenhandel und die Finanzierung illegaler Todesschwadronen nachgesagt werden. Als er gerade dabei ist, seinen Auftrag auszuführen, kommt ihm ein anderer Schütze zuvor und erschießt seine Zielperson. Schütze ist der scheinbar durchgeknallte Miguel Bain, der vor Ort von der eintreffenden Polizei verhaftet wird. Noch im Polizeiwagen auf dem Weg ins Revier gelingt es ihm zu fliehen, wobei er drei Polizisten tötet.Dass ihm jemand seinen Auftrag vor der Nase wegschnappt, will Rath nicht auf sich sitzen lassen und zudem herausfinden, wer sein Konkurrent ist und wer sein Auftraggeber war. Rath stiehlt ein Taxi und wartet auf einen passenden Funkspruch: Erfolgreich gelingt es ihm, als vorgeblicher Taxifahrer Bain zu einer Fahrt zum Flughafen mitzunehmen. Nach einiger Zeit erkennt dieser, dass ihn Robert Rath fährt, der sein großes Vorbild als Auftragsmörder ist. Da sie im Taxi durch kugelsicheres Panzerglas getrennt sind, kommt es zu einem Gespräch zwischen den beiden. Bain erklärt, dass er Rath zwar bewundert, ihn aber töten muss, damit er der Beste seines Gewerbes werden kann. Er demonstriert seine Skrupellosigkeit, indem er damit droht, Unschuldige zu erschießen und kann entkommen, während die Polizei das Taxi verfolgt.Rath gelingt es, der Polizei zu entkommen. Er will sich nun zurückziehen – da bekommt er das verlockende Angebot von zwei Millionen US-Dollar für einen weiteren Auftrag und lässt sich noch einmal darauf ein. Eine Computerspezialistin aus Seattle plant, gestohlene Daten auf einer Diskette an vier niederländische Käufer zu veräußern. Rath soll die Käufer eliminieren und die Diskette besorgen. Die Computerspezialistin und offensichtliche Katzenliebhaberin, von der es keine Bilder gibt und die nur unter dem Namen Electra bekannt ist, soll er ebenfalls töten.In dem Marriott-Hotel, in dem die Transaktion stattfinden soll, kommt es zu einigen Komplikationen, da auch Bain hinter der Frau und ihren Käufern her ist. Die vier Käufer werden von Bain erschossen und stellen sich als verdeckte Ermittler von Interpol heraus. Rath kann mit Electra fliehen, aber Bain kann anhand der von Electra zurückgelassenen Katzenfotos deren Wohnung ausfindig machen. Derweil kann Electra Rath abschütteln, verliert dabei jedoch ihre geliebte Katze, mit deren Hilfe der Profi sie erneut aufspüren kann. In ihrer Wohnung kommt es zu einem erneuten Kampf mit Bain, zwei unbeteiligte Nachbarn werden getötet. Rath jagt schließlich mithilfe einer Gasleitung die Wohnung in die Luft, wobei Bain verletzt wird, aber entkommen kann.Nachdem Rath die Diskette gegen einen Geldkoffer ausgetauscht hatte, bemerkt er, dass sich im Koffer eine Bombe befindet und kann diese noch rechtzeitig wegwerfen. Die Diskette hatte Electra bereits vorsorglich ausgetauscht. Bei einem erneuten Kontakt bietet der Käufer nun für die Diskette 20 Millionen US-Dollar, die er auf ein Bankkonto in San Juan transferieren soll. Rath plant, das Geld in eben jener Bank abzuholen, vor der er 15 Jahre zuvor Nicolai erschossen hatte, und dort die Diskette zu hinterlegen. Bain erhält in der Zwischenzeit den Auftrag, Rath zu töten. Bain verhält sich so, wie Rath es erwartet hatte, und wählt mit dem Fenster eines verlassenen Hotels genau dieselbe Schussposition gegenüber der Bank wie einst sein großes Vorbild. Rath lässt ihn jedoch über Stunden zappeln, bis Bain schließlich nervös wird und ihm in die Bank folgt. In dieser Zeit versucht Electra, Bains zurückgelassenes Gewehr an sich zu nehmen.Sie bricht jedoch durch den morschen Boden im Gebäude und Bain kehrt zurück, dicht gefolgt von Rath, der aufgrund des abgerissenen Funkkontakts ahnt, dass Electra in Schwierigkeiten ist. Mit vereinten Kräften können die beiden Bain bezwingen, da taucht plötzlich der verstorben geglaubte Nicolai auf. Er überlebte das Attentat mit einer kugelsicheren Weste, da er wusste, dass Rath seinem Opfer ins Herz schießen würde – so führte er seit Beendigung des Kalten Krieges unerkannt ein unbehelligtes Leben. Er war zugleich der anonyme Auftraggeber von Rath, da die von Electra gestohlenen Daten brisante Informationen über seine geheime Identität und die ihn deckende Geheimorganisation enthielten. Nun will er das Geld wieder an sich nehmen und alle Beteiligten töten. Der am Boden liegende Bain ist jedoch noch nicht am Ende und erschießt zusammen mit Rath Nicolai. Anschließend will er auch Rath von hinten erschießen, aber Electra setzt ihre Sonnenbrille auf, sodass Rath ihn in der Spiegelung hinter sich sehen und durch seine Jacke hindurch erschießen kann. Rath und Electra nehmen den Geldkoffer und verschwinden gemeinsam.

Non penso ci sia altro da dire. Semplicemente Capolavoro... da vedere per chi non l'ha visto e da comprare per chi ama collezionare film. Immancabile

Réalisé en 1995 par Richard DONNER, ce film d’action réunit à l’affiche Sylvester STALLONE et Antonio BANDERAS, dans des rôles de tueurs à gages. L’acteur américain interprète ici le rôle de Robert Rath, le meilleur dans sa profession. Alors qu’il souhaite prendre une retraite paisible, un jeune tueur, complétement fougueux et imprévisible, Michael Bain, interprété par l’acteur espagnol, va essayer de le tuer, afin de prouver qu’il est le numéro un. Rath va trouver une alliée inattendue avec Electra (Julianne MOORE), une pirate informatique, ancienne cible de Bain.Bien qu’affichant 22 ans au compteur, en termes d’ancienneté, ce film se regarde toujours avec le même plaisir, efficace, percutant, rythmé, le face à face des deux tueurs professionnels est très bien mené, jusqu’au final, le suspense est très bien gardé quant à celui qui restera en vie et celui qui sera bien entendu éliminé, car il ne doit en rester qu’un.Sylvester STALLONE arrive à rendre parfaitement la sobriété de son personnage, il pense pouvoir se retirer une fois toutes ses missions menées à bien, mais il est obligé de faire un dernier round face à un jeune persuadé d’être meilleur que lui, avec qui il devra lutter physiquement, mais aussi avoir recours à des ruses psychologiques pour s’en débarrasser, faisant de toute son expérience, un considérable atout.Antonio BANDERAS est parfait dans son rôle de tueur plein de rage et de fougue, qui cherche à éliminer l’ancienne garde, il met toute sa hargne et sa détermination à remplir son objectif, ce qui donne lieu à des scènes d’action tout simplement impressionnantes et complétement folles.Julianne MOORE complète impeccablement le trio, en interprétant son personnage de pirate informatique, qui aide Rath à contrer l’implacable tueur qu’est Bain, après avoir réussi à échapper à ce dernier.Côté blu ray, l’image est tout simplement superbe, les couleurs sont belles, le contraste est très efficace, un des meilleurs rendus HD qui soit.Le son est également très bon, le rendu est clair, détaillé, les dialogues sont bien équilibrés et les scènes d’action sont carrément sublimées. La VF affiche une très bonne qualité, mais la VO est encore mieux, plus percutante, arrivant à rendre un réel dynamisme au son.Côté bonus, c’est une réelle déception, il y a juste la bande annonce.Assassins, est un très bon film, injustement mésestimé à sa sortie, qui mérite une seconde chance. Très bon film d’action. A voir et à revoir.
