Is the aluminium version any less stable or flexible? I'm not a malnutritioned child, so I'm not concerned with the 3/4 pound weight difference.

I own the carbon-fiber one and like it a lot. Although I have experience with the aluminum version, I cannot believe that it would be less stable. I think the only significant factor is weight.

How sturdy is this tripod? I do astrophotography and shoot planets with large lens and need a sturdy lens. Can this handle that?

It’s a sturdy tripod...but I wouldn’t use it for heavy lens. Even my 70-200 feels heavy on it. Forget about even longer telephoto zooms. While I would use it for portraits on location (and which is what I do mostly), I use primes like my Sony 135 and 85 GM. For that it’s fine. But I feel the tripod vibrates too much for long exposures (which I noticed when I did some seascapes the last two weeks). So no: I wouldn’t suggest it for astro or LE photography. I had wind and the images came out too soft for anything over 5 s. But for other things, this tripod is a dream. Compared to my Manfrotto BeFree CF tripod, this one is a pleasure to carry around. Folds very tightly and fits inside my camera backpack with my other gear very well. Hope that helps.

Can this swivel 360 degree rotation and also shot at different angles?

Yea, all the above.. the center shaft is extendable for additional height, and the base that the camera sits on is on a ball allow your camera 360 movement as well as landscap/portrait positions.. we love it.. been all around the world with it.
