Will this span a 1-½" gap or will it bend and fall like all the food that is currently in the gap?

The total width of the gap cover is 2 1/2 inches. The ridge that fits into the opening is 1/2 inch and that rests on the stove. The rest of the width (2 inches) covers onto the counter. You make the judgement, but I believe it should work.

My stove is taller than the counters, just like half an inch or so and also they are pretty close together. Would this be of any use?

Maybe not. My stove is also higher than the counter top, but not that much. You may want one with the piece that goes between the stove and counter top to be longer. The little ridge that goes between the stove and counter top is about a 1/4". Look for something with the ridge about a 1/2" or more. I do know the matte black is the best color and it doesn't get sticky like the shiny black. Hope this helps.

Does the larger side go on the counter or the stovetop, or does it make any difference?

I put the larger size on the counter because it fits a little better with my stove but I don’t think there is a wrong way. I love these things! So easy to clean!
