Russian for Beginners

This book makes learning Russian easier than I ever imagined. It beats anything new on the market including Rosetta Stone. Everything in simply broken down bit by bit, and very carefully organized into well thought out chapters. This book does not teach you sentences to memorize so you can just speak what you know. It breaks it down and teaches you the sentence structures, formulating nouns, verbs, adjectives; as well as how to properly arrange words in the sentence correctly to not sound like a foreigner.By the time you get to the end of the book, you are able to fluently read entire paragraphs and excerpts from books. They also give a list of the next books to buy to continue and advance your studies which I found helpful. The three books recommended were all from three different authors so they really aren't trying to make an extra dollar off of you, just give you some good help!

I bought this same book some time ago, but it disappeared after moving. I like it so much, I went ahead and bought another copy. This timeless book shares a lot of important information that explains tricky nuances related to Russian grammar and syntax. Every now and then there are examples of Russian humor in the form of cartoons similar to those found in the '-for Dummies' books that make reading much more challenging and enjoyable.

Огромное Срасибо, Макаров и Дуфф!! Great and comprehensive guide to Russian. Russian language and literature was my major in college and this is perhaps the best Russian grammar break down, I've seen. Highly recommend to ALL levels of non-Heritage speakers.

This book really forces you to tackle the nuts and bolts of the Russian language which makes learning it somewhat less daunting. The lessons are systematically arranged to enhance understanding rather than simple memorization and highlights areas of weakness one needs to correct to learn Russian competently.

This is a very old tutorial book, originally appearing in the ...for Adults.. series. I assume the titles were changed to Beginners to avoid the wrong sort of customer. These Charles Duff publications provide an excellent foundation for more advanced study, do not insult the learner's intelligence and use relevant, varied and interesting material. If you wish to learn Russian from scratch - this is your answer. I bought this volume out of nostalgia, having given away my own original copy forty years ago before graduating in Russian and German in 1974.

I would strongly recommend it over any other book I came across while learning Russian. It is also suitable for self-learners.

Avoid like the plague. It's not a way to learn a language at all. It's hundreds of pages of grammar rules but no practice, no engaging layout, and nothing to motivate you to want to open it.
