Lazy ants!! :)
The ants seemed to like it, but the lazy things never grew a single thing. Ants are apparently horrible farmers :)

We have a fantastic Experience
We ordered for our daughter (budding young biologist). It was fantastic...I saw other review about problems, but we had none. We purchased the kit, sent in for the ants (which we received regular updates), made the holes, received the ants, put the ants in the farm, KEPT the farm in a "protected" area. They do not like a lot of light or changes in temperature. Instructions said the ants would live for about 3 months and it was close to that when finally they all died. Lots of great tunnels too.I personally thought the whole thing was rather ingenious. No worries about them escaping either. My ONLY complaint is after two sets of ants, there isn't much gel left. I wish they would sell a refill kit for the gel, but they don't. So I am off to purchase a new one.

Updating my review...
****Below is my initial review of this product. But about a month after initially putting the ants in the farm, everything changed. They began dying slowly. And then finally they were all dead. They did make a lot of tunnels which was fun to watch, but after they finished the tunnels they spent all their time at the top trying to escape. And then they just all died. So while it was fun to watch and we did enjoy it, we were upset that it was so short lived. We know ants don't live long lives but we expected more than a month. The family that I gave one to as a gift had the same issue. They however didn't order ants from the company, rather they caught their own from outside and they did tunnel some but they also died fairly quickly as well. So a lot of fun and educational but for a short amount of time.*****----My 6 year old son received one of these for Christmas. It was a bit disappointing that we would have to wait to get the ants shipped to us, but totally understandable. We didn't think the $5 for shipping on the ants was a big deal. We went ahead and ordered them so we wouldn't forget and then went about our daily lives. We received a few updates and finally a little over a week ago we received the email letting us know they were on their way! A few short days later we received a vial of 25 ants, and only 6 of them were dead. The remaining 19 ants are still doing great 4 days later. They have successfully built several tunnels off of the original three openings that my son created in the gel. Yes, they do seem to try to escape up at the top, and yes the lid seems a little loose fitting so we taped it. Our light bar works and lights up the gel nicely when it is turned on. We will probably try to get an a/c adapter so we don't use up a bunch of batteries. We have really enjoyed watching the ants, as does everyone that comes to our house. So at this point we are very happy with this product and do recommend it. I actually just bought 2 more of them, to give as gifts, from a seller here on Amazon. If anything changes I will come back and right another review. But as of now I am giving a good review :)

Great toy for the price that I paid!!
I was weary about buying this, but for the price that I paid, I thought I'd give it a go. I was extremely disappointed when I realized that the LED light described on the page has to be ordered separately. I ended up ordering the ants from antsalive because they are very experienced and guarantee live arrival. They did all arrive alive and I made the three starter tunnels in the farm. They didn't do much of anything the first couple of days, but now they are so fun to watch! Tunnels and burrows are popping up everywhere! This is a nice ant farm, but the next one that I purchase will be the blue gel one on antsalive for sure.

This ant farm is not as advertised
I ordered this ant farm off of amazon because the picture shown was for an ant farm that connected to another one. The description of the product also said that it would connect to another one. It was my dream to connect the two farms and to one day have the two colonies meet, and re-enact a scene from "Lost" when they find "the others." Or maybe the two colonies would be at war, but two ants would fall in love like Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," and I would find two star-crossed lovers alone and dead one day to my dismay?Long story short, I ordered two of them so as to connect them to one another. When the orders arrived they did not connect to one another...WTF? That is the whole reason why I ordered them in the first place. If you can swallow THAT pill then ant farms are great. I noticed most of the ants died pretty quickly in one of the farms for no apparent reason, so I complained to the ant people and they sent me a new batch with little to no questions.

Alien Ant Mutiny...Ahhhhh!
This ant farm is absolutely cool! We followed the instructions and we ended up with tons of interlocking, gorgeously formed tunnels within 2 weeks.POWER: We used rechargeable batteries in it and the way it lights up the tunnels is really neat at night.ANTS: It took us 10 days to receive our ants (they were shipped from a location about an hour from our home). The ants are always active except at night. If you leave their light on all the time, the instructions say the ants will not do well (for those with exhausted ants), cold temperature also makes them lazy.PROBLEM: 3 weeks into our very happy ant farming experience, we started finding ants around the house - randomly - crawling on us. Mind you, we do not have this type of ant in our area - they were definitely from the farm. After finding several, we moved the farm outdoors and emailed the company. We will see how this is resolved. Such a shame because we were really loving this farm...and we are so bummed to not be able to keep it up! And it is crazy to realize these ants do climb glass after piling up their gel bites on the top and apparently can squeeze through the air holes.

Ants escaped!
I caught some regular old black ants from a colony on my property. approx 4-5mm in length. Luckily I had only caught about 6 of em. I had a peek before I went to bed and 2 were on my side of the farm and a 3rd was half way through the air hold in the side. These are not that tiny and compare in size to western harvesters. they must be thinner or something. The ants just hid in the starter holes I had dug for the first several hours, till they found the air holes. Cant get western harvester ants anywhere in canada and will cost a fortune to get from us sites. The free ant coupon is only valid in the us.
