Game was perfect when I had it as a kid and I still love it

I was so excited to play my most fave nostalgic nfs game but sadly I couldn’t. The game loaded up perfectly fine, until I got to the part of the loading screen asking if I would like to insert a memory card in my PlayStation 2. Memory card’s aren’t required to play games so I assumed I could just load it up no problem. The game wouldn’t let me select yes or no like my controller wouldn’t even let me click anything. It was like the game was frozen. I’ve played multiple games in my system to know it works properly but again sadly nfs carbon didn’t. I’d really like some feed back or any help with my situation. Thank you.
