The Do of that old Karate-do +++
The author of this deep and full work on older Karate-do, Ronald Lindsey, has spent decades practicing and researching an older Art of Karate-do -- developed under extreme pressure by warrior mentors of Ryukyu [Okinawa] -- in order to survive, arrest wrong-doers and even guard their castle at Shuri and its royalty -- all while supposedly mostly unarmed -- versus [local Okinawan] thugs, various pirates and even Japanese and Western intruders. What has resulted, as shown by this work and some others, is a balanced Art of *health-defense*, that includes main aspects like karate [*kumite*]. aikido [*tegumi*] and even arnis [*kobudo*]. As shown on the cover of this book, the author is aware that *Bushi Sokon Matsumura* was a central source of Matsumura Karate-do and related Karate-do. So, Sokon Matsumura and the Matsumura Karate-do radiating via this Bushi -- is a central concern of this work. Along the way, many aspects of Karate-do are covered, neither sparing nor spurning efforts to support understanding this particular ancient traditional Karate-do -- but thereby supporting understanding of Ryukyu arts in general, including other Karate-do arts. Even older Ryukyu history and culture are presented in the early part of this book to provide background to understanding older Ryukyu [Okinawan] Bushi origins of later Karate-do. This work is very deep and full -- even comparing older Karate to older Boxing -- they are more similar than modern folk may assume. Angles, position, posture and timing are primary aspects of survival and self-defense Karate-do -- including fluid, clear and sharp movement -- that is not limited to just kicking, punching and chopping -- but rather any moves that can deck foes [while bypassing opposition and avoiding trouble as possible]. Yet, as also shown so well via this work -- kicking, punching and chopping can be perfected and integrated into an all-out Way of self-defense. This book is one of only a few on this topic -- *Old Real Karate-do* -- like "The Secret Royal Martial Arts of Ryukyu" and "Shotokan's Secret". Combine info and angles from all three of these books with the traditional triple *kumite* / *tegumi* / *kobudo* [secret-sword-based] Kata of Karate-do -- and we have a wonderful view into *The Do of that old Karate-do* +++

A very interesting gathering of information about Okinawan karate, people, and culture. The author lived & trained in Okinawa during a time when the old masters were still alive and teaching young American service men their martial arts. Many rare photos and detailed explanations of technique and fighting strategy. Mr Lindsey has spent a lifetime researching for this book and this reader thanks him for sharing his wealth of information.

Okinawa No Bushi
Okinawa No Bushi No Te The Hands Of The Okinawan Bushi written by Sensi Ronald Lindsey is a must have book. Sensi Lindsey is and was ahead of his time. Having lived in Okinawa Japan and trained in the style of Shurite or Shorin Ryu Sensi Lindsey has written a book about his journey to Okinawa, the history of Shorin Ryu, the many different styles of martial arts taught in Okinawan, as well as the history about the Masters of Okinawa Shorin Ryu. In his book Sensi Lindsey has broken Shurite or Shorin Ryu down to a science. He stress the importance of proper technique and proper body mechanics that can cause blows to have a more devastating impact then one's that have just bruit force. What I mean by that is a person doesn't have to be ultimate strong to do damage to a person, the way you move your hips, shoulders, change body, dropping your body weight and move on the balls of your feet instead of heels makes a big difference. All the knowledge Sensi Lindsey has received over the years training in Okinawan Japan from Masters such as Sokon "Bushi" Matsumura (1797-1889), Nabe Matsumura (1860-1930), Hohan Soken (1889-1982), Yuichi Kuda (1928-1999) and Fusei Kise are put in this book. This book is a must have for the serious Karate Practitioners.

Bushi No Te Review
I purchased the book through Amazon. It was of interest to me because of my training in the Matsumura-ha. Lindsey goes through the history of Okinawa and some of the ancient masters. He focuses on the teaching of Hohan Soken and his students-Kuda, Kise and Kinjo. The part I found most useful was his explanations of the fighting strategies of "village style" vs "school style" karate.Stepping strategies, body change or tai sabaki, etc. I had the opportunity to train with Mr. Lindsey one time and can attest to his abilities. Belonged to Sensei Kise's organization for a few years and had the pleasure of training with him in Okinawa. Have belonged to Kuda Sensei's organization for many more years. The book even included a photo and mention of my first instructor, Greg Ohl. So for me it was a worthwhile purchase. If you have an interest in old style karate or the Matsumura-ha or just an interest in Okinawan Karate the book should be of interest to you.Duane

Il libro mantiene quello che promette.Un mondo di conoscenza su una realtà spesso nascosta e mistificata come il Karate di Okinawa.Merita di acquistarlo.
