I use Affresh cleaner for both my washing machine and dishwasher and keep both on hand as part of regular appliance maintenance. For the dishwasher, I try to use one tablet about once a month rather than waiting until there is an obvious odor or heavy buildup. I have used these in several dishwashers, including an older machine that was probably around 15 years old and newer machines as well. Both our home and cottage have well water and septic systems, but the cottage water is much harder. We deal with more rust, mineral buildup, film and staining there, so dishwasher maintenance feels especially important. Our home water is better, but after moving from city water to well water, I feel regular maintenance is more important here too. Interestingly, I use these about as often at the cottage as I do at home even though the cottage dishwasher gets considerably less use. Sitting unused between visits can be part of the problem for me. Moisture and residue can linger, and that is when I am especially likely to notice a stale or musty smell. I would rather keep up with regular cleaning than wait for that to become noticeable. What I like: • Very easy to use • Premeasured tablet — no mixing or measuring • Helps control musty or unpleasant odors • Leaves a mild, fresh lemon scent without a strong chemical smell • I have noticed less film and residue with regular use • Helps clean areas and water pathways I cannot easily reach by hand • Tablets have always dissolved completely for me • Works well in both older and newer dishwashers • Septic-friendly, which is important to me • Six tablets gives me roughly six months of maintenance • At around $1.50 per treatment, I think the cost is very reasonable I usually run mine in an empty dishwasher. If the machine has a cleaning cycle, I use that. Otherwise, I use a heavy cycle so it gets one of the hotter, more thorough cycles available. I still clean the dishwasher filter and other accessible areas manually and generally use a rinse agent. I see these tablets as one part of regular maintenance rather than something that replaces basic dishwasher care. Things to be aware of: • I think these work best as ongoing maintenance rather than waiting for severe buildup • I would not expect one tablet to undo years of heavy mineral deposits • Results can be gradual and preventative rather than a dramatic one-time transformation • If I notice even a slight musty smell between monthly cleanings, I will run another tablet sooner Overall: For me, this is inexpensive preventative maintenance. A dishwasher has plenty of internal areas and water pathways that cannot simply be wiped down by hand, and that matters even more when dealing with hard well water, mineral buildup, or a machine that may sit unused for periods of time. I also hope that keeping residue and mineral deposits under better control is beneficial to the dishwasher over the long term. I cannot say a cleaner will make an appliance last longer, but keeping the machine maintained rather than letting buildup accumulate makes sense to me. I have used these with city water, well water, older dishwashers and newer ones, and I continue to keep them on hand. For about one tablet a month, this is an easy maintenance habit I am happy to continue.
