How is the sound quality/volume when using the speaker on the base unit? The Panasonic unit I have now is terrible in this regard. Thanks.

Base unit hands-free speaker works reasonably well with tolerable sound quality. I don't use the base unit hands-free much but it's as least as good as some of the more expensive office-type units I've used. The mobile unit's hands-free works quite well and I use it in this mode often.

To be clear: the cordless handset has a port for a headset? Or is it on the base?

Cordless Handset has a Port for a Headset on the Side of the Cordless Handset. (Headset does Not come with the phone.) (No port on base.)

does this phone system require a splitter in order for the two lines to work?

Normally, NO splitter is needed. The Line-1 Jack of the Vtech 6.0 2-Line phone is wired for {L-1 + L-2}. No splitter is needed as long as the phone cord is for a 2-Line phone and is plugged into a correctly wired jack that is connected to two phone lines.I use one phone cord that is wired for two phone lines. The the two-line phone cord is connected to the first port on an OBi202 ATA telephone phone adapter that supports phone service for two phone lines.

Can I use two bases with the same 2 lines?

You would need to have an additional line (2 lines), otherwise the two bases would each be trying to answer the same calls.
