BEST shave butter available. Have been using for about five years. Recommend this product for a smooth clean shave.

Like many, I was hoping to find an cheaper alternative to Dr. Carver's Shave Butter (6oz ~$8.00) So that said, I'll compare Dr. Carver's to Van Der Hagen Shave Butter, but also some other alternatives (Jack Black Supreme Cream, Cremo Shave Cream, and Herban Cowboy). First off, just because a product calls itself "butter" doesnt mean it really is. I think that Dr. Carver's set an expectation that a shave butter, well resembles butter, in that its slick and translucent when applied. Van Der Hagen, in that sense, is not a butter, but a cream. Van Der Hagen. 6oz. $5.97: Smells good, gives a smooth shave, a little goes a long way, is not "sticky" like other creams. I have a goatee, so the beauty of Dr. Carver's is that is translucent, and I can easily see the lines of the goatee, and get a super clean shave. Creams sort of "get in the way", and have to be wiped away to see the lines of a goatee, which can be a pain. That said, Van Der Hagen wiped away more easily that the others below. Jack Black. 2.6oz. $13.00: Not a "butter", but a cream. A little goes a long way. It does have a "tinglee" sort of sensation, which I dont like, but perhaps others would. It is more expensive than any of the shave products reviewed. Cremo. 6oz. $7.19: Smells nice. Not a butter, but a cream. Gives a close shave. A little thick, so its tough to brush away from goatee lines when shaving Herban Cowboy. 6.7oz: $6.99: Not a butter, but a cream. Insanely sticky, so very difficult to brush away from goatee lines. Gives an "OK" shave. To me not a contender. So, all that said. With Van Der Hagen you are saving yourself a few bucks, getting a nice smell, and can get it here on Amazon. Hope this helps.

Way better than normal shaving cream for shaving scalp. Leaves scalp feeling moisturized. No drying out.

Using Van Der Hagen Shave Butter always allow me to shave smoothly. My facial hair comes off easily with the use of a blade. It also feels nice during the shaving process.

Great stuff. A close smooth shave, with a pleasant scent.

If you are used to foam or gel shave cream it is a bit disappointing. It applies very thin. But it works. Doesn’t seem as protective as a good foam or gel. It is very good that it is clean of toxic chemicals, which many or most foams and gels contain. That’s why I bought it.

I’ll probably never use normal shaving cream again

I have very sensitive skin, every other shave butter I tried caused acne. This feels like facial cream, countering any discomfort and has a very mild but pleasant scent While not the most slippery butter I have used it does extend blade life vs a foaming shave gell and you use far less. Use lots of water with the butter.

I shave my head with a pivot-head disposable razor once or twice each week. I always seem to come away with half a dozen or more nicks and cuts, no matter how careful I am. I'd been using the same shave butter for about 3 years. It was by far the best I'd found, but had become ridiculously expensive in Canada. Figured I'd try something new, but had pretty low expectations. I have to admit I was impressed: a noticeably closer shave than I'd been getting but without any nicks or cuts. So this is my new favorite.
