Is there another inch of depth in the lid? Is it padded?. A 1.2" difference between interior and exterior...really?

There is an egg carton type sponge in the lid, it appears to be glued. I haven't removed it, but it is thick enough to gain another inch.

Mine was damaged inside the box. What's the procedure? Thanks
