Q: can you recommend a good shimano saltwater rod to pair with this reel?

I perfer one piece rods. Ugly sticks make a lot of good heavy Rods that work well with this reel. I have an ugly stick with one and a Shimano rod with another. The ugly stick is about 6'6" and the other one is a lil over 7'

Q: I want to pair the 4000 with an ugly stik tiger lite 6'9 medium action rod. Do you think the 4000 os too small or should i shoot for the 6000?

I think you would be better off with the 6000 for a medium action rod. The 4000 is better suited for a light to medium rod.
