sure, you can use it without the brush, if you need to clean stubborn stain on the floor, you can install the brush into the mop.

Q: What is the spongy part made of? I have smooth concrete floors and need something that is more sturdy than the foam that is often used. Thanks.

I think that the sponge part is more sturdy than the typical "bright yellow" sponges that come with alot of the spongs mops. I have used mine to clean granite tile shower floor and although I have only had the mop a few weeks the sponge is holding up just fine. Being that said, even though it is more dense and firm than typical drug store sponge mops, it is a sponge and it is porous so eventually it may wear out.
