Does this belt help with mid-back pain? I am in my 8th month and having pain in my mid-back.

It has for me. I got the belt at 6 months and didn't start using it really until my 7th month. I'm 34 weeks now and I use it everyday at work and when I'll be out for long periods of time (shopping, running errands, etc). At work, I am on my feet for 5-6 hours with few breaks. As soon as I get off work I take the belt off. Your'e not supposed to wear it all day due to the fact that your body will start to rely on the belt for support not your muscles with prolonged use. You are switching off your core muscles and you could weaken the muscles further with prolonged over-use of the belts. Long term use of the support belts can deactivate your muscles this could make your back and hip pain worse.

What's the smallest waist this will fit? I'm concerned with it being too loose as I'm small myself.

I was a size 0, XXS and I am 5,6". I gained 30 pounds during pregnancy and this fit me just fine in the last 4 months. I used it when I walked or did more physical work around the house. I don't know what my waist size was before pregnancy, but I know this did fit and it is adjustable!

Is this band machine washable?

I would strongly suggest washing it in a wash bag. The velcro will attach and snag other clothing. I returned mine the belt didn't give any additional support.

What is the width of the belt (top to bottom when on your belly)? Looks like maybe 4-5in?

Yes! It is around 4 to 5 inches wide. I love mine. Works great.
