Is this small enough to work in a tank that's only 6 inches deep?

Yes. I'll explain why: The intake is comprised of a U-shaped piece that attaches to two straight sections. If you omit one of the sections, your intake will extend 4.5 inches down into the tank from the rim. This assembly would work for a nano tank that is 6 inches deep. For your awareness, if someone were to use all 3 intake pieces (as I currently do), the intake extends 6.25 inches down into the tank from the rim. I measured all of this to ensure I'm giving you accurate info.

Which way do I turn the knob for less flow?

Either direction works, it's just a butterfly.

Why cant i get replacement filters

But Aimee cut to fit filter Fibre and make your own. Is Cheaper and of higher quality. Carbon in the toe of a pantyhose and your set. Don't have to change carbon every time because there is more of it than is ever offered as part of a component filter pad. Rinse when you change the fiber.
