Many Thousand Gone: African Americans from Slavery to Freedom

This is a lovely looking book but we are discovering inaccuracies in the text. For example, it says that Dred Scott was born in Missouri. He was born in Virgina and moved to Missouri later. It also calls the case Scott vs Sanford, when it was Sandford. It gives us the opportunity as a class to discuss skepticism about source materials, but I’m surprised the author didn’t uphold stricter fact-checking about such important details.

I love Virginia Hamilton Books and her illustrators. Her books come alive as you're reading and the artistry is so very captivating. I have purchased her books for years and have gifted them also. I enjoy passing the along great books.

I couldn't wait to get this book out the packege. I started reading and didn't stop until I read the whole book.I never heard the stories of runaway slaves.I read the story of Soloman Northup free then kidnapped and taken to a slave state for 12 years. Until reading this book I had never heard of Soloman and how he was tricked away from his family.There is presently being made a movie of Solamans' journey!All the stories are great reading.The story of Alexander Ross was very good,as I had never heard of him and how helped runaway slaves.

Classic!! I hope to read this to my grandkids someday! My babies love them!

I bought this book for my daughter to accompany "The People Could Fly". These stories are very well written.
