Approximately how many water color pencils can this hold

If you don’t want to stack them one on top another, 10 Polychromos or 10 Prismacolor pencils will lay flat in each small section without stacking one on top another. I don’t have watercolor pencils but I am guessing they are similar in size. Quite a few more can fit in each section if you layer them.

How well do paint markers fit in it?

I assume you are referring to felt tipped markers (e.g. "Magic Marker"). They fit perfectly with just enough sticking out to grab and remove. This can be seen in the forth image down along the left side of the product display page. I have pens, pencils, a scissor, a magnifying glass, glasses case, letter opener. The slots have a well-designed depth. Hope this helps.
