Military Combat (Battle 360 Season 1 / Dogfights Seasons 1 and 2 / Dogfights of the Future) [DVD]

Sea & Air Warfare in WWII
Both use computer animation that is well done & brings to life the experiences of the people involved (esp some of the explosions on the Big E).Battle 360: very interesting documentary on The Big E being a major actor in the Pacific Theater. Would've been nice to see more details on its fights w/ the various Japanese ships it kept coming into contact with.Dogfights: I found this more interesting than Battle 360, but I wish they included some dogfights from the Italians or Soviets as they also had some fascinating encounters. An episode focusing on WWII aces would have been a nice addition. My favorite episodes were some of the unexpected ones dealing w/ IAF (Israeli Air Force) & Desert Storm since most of the series focuses on WWII, and less on Korea & Vietnam. Amongst the WWII eps I would count the one on the Flying Tigers, kamikazes, and secret weapons as my favs in that subject. I liked how a bonus included a survey of dogfights from WWI through Vietnam as it allowed an understanding on the evolution of the dogfight via tech. Another great bonus is the addition of the special focusing on the types of planes. They explain well the maneuvers pilots used (such as rolling scissors) for people not familiar w/ the terminology. It would've been a great addition if they went beyond Vietnam more into the 1990s. The Dogfights of the Future ep was a hypothetical simulation dealing w/ possibilities such as growing threats to the U.S. & ended w/ the possibility of space wars.I would recommend both series (esp the latter) to anyone.

Two Outstanding History Channel Series
This set consists of Season One of Battle 360 which is focused entirely on the combat exploits of the Aircraft Carrier, U.S.S. Enterprise. In my opinion this is one of the History Channel's best true history series, and uses elaborate computer graphic re-enactments, interwoven with real combat footage to tell the chronological history of this great ship. In Battle 360 the combat history of the Enterprise is accurately and engagingly told. Battle 360 is literally big-picture narrative history as done by the old History Channel at its very best. By the same token, Seasons I and II of Dogfights, is also one of the old History Channel's all-time best series, spanning aerial combat from WW I through Desert Storm. In contrast to Battle 360, Dogfights does an excellent job of dissecting small air combat encounters, using interviews of actual pilots and state-of-the-art computer graphic re-enactments. But the small encounters are accurately placed in the larger picture of the conflicts in which they took place. These two series literally represent what seems to be the last attempt of the History Channel to tell true and accurate history. Dogfights, and Battle 360 represent accurate and unbiased American history, told with all the narrative tension of a good novel.

Outstanding value for money but too American-sided
If you're interested in XXth century military history and technology, this box won't disappoint you and offers hours of captivating reconstructions of air and naval battles, plus very welcome veteran interviews. Picture and sound quality are excellent for a DVD and pass very well the test of full HD upscaling by a blu-ray player.Nonetheless, for an European viewer, these programs have two shortcomings:-the endemic US TV show plague, being the unstopping repetition of what's been said a moment ago, because on US TV the show is constantly interrupted by commercials. The commercials happily (and of course) don't feature on DVD, but the flow of the show is still somewhat spoiled.-only the US side is represented. No Japanese or German veteran speaks, and what they experienced on their side, their point of view are totally neglected. As far as the "Dogfights" show is concerned, it could also have been nice to tell something about the story of air combat outside US forces, as plenty nice dogfights were fought by UK, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Soviet, Israeli and so on pilots.Despite of this, it's an excellent purchase and I enjoy watching it.

A great history lesson!
Both the Dogfights episodes and Battle 360 are a great way to learn about history and aspects, of WWII in particular, that you may never have known about. The story of Taffy 3 needs to be made into a movie with today's technology.

Loads for good price
I got this primarily for Dogfights but there was a huge in-depth description of WWII in the Pacific in Battle 360 as well. The narration is clear, everything is realistic, well-described, and all-around excellent history. One of the best military documentaries period. Got this as a Christmas gift for my dad who is a pilot and enjoyed watching the series here and there with me when we had time when it first aired.

MILITARY COMBAT
OH MAN, WHAT CAN I SAY EXCEPT THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A WW11 AIR FAN AND ESPECIALLY THE PACIFIC AIR WAR. THIS IS A GREAT TRIBUTE TO ALL THE BRAVE MEN WHO FOUGHT AND DIED IN THIS TERRIBLE BUT DESPERATE CONFLICT . THE GRAPHIC EFFECTS ARE UNREAL, I RECOMMEND THIS TO ANY ONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN THIS TIME IN HISTORY
