Principles of Digital Communication Review: Fantastically well written and probably the best introductory graduate book - Prof. Gallager is a well known figure in the communication and information theory community with decades of teaching (and research) experience. And it is exactly this experience which he has utilized so well to write one of the best graduate digital communication books ever. He is able to perceive pretty much all questions a reader might have and he goes on to answer them as clearly as possible. The strongest points of this book are 1. clarity and preciseness 2. strong fundamentals and 3. intuitive and logical selection and presentation of content A thorough study of this book and information theory (Cover and Thomas) essentially provides a fantastic foundation for future work in digital communications. For more advanced students, Prof. Gallager's book on information theory will also be a delight to read! Review: Principles of Digital Communication - Robert Gallager is an Emeritus professor at MIT, a legend in the field of communication theory. To no surprise, his book is a great resource. I bought this book for class and I am reading it cover to cover. So far (read up to chapter 5) the book is a relatively easy read. What I mean with by that is that it is not dry or painful to read. This book, as communications, is extremely mathematical and focuses more on how and why things work rather than how to make them work. Overall a great book and resource. Gallager's old lectures, his MIT classes, where he used the book are available as video lectures in MIT's OpenCourseware at [...] search 6.450, or Principles of Digital Communications I.

A must book to learn Digital communication for the Graduates, Post Grad and Researchers.
Simply the best book on Digital Communication. It is mathematical, but with patience, i.e. in one month in combination with video lectures on MIT website, one can really understand the subject. Even the video lectures do not come as close to the contents of the book. The book is really worth and very extensive. In just 400 pages, you get lot of intuitive and analytical expertise where other well known authors fell short. I have both Kindle and paperback, both form Amazon. There are little extra errors in Kindle compared to in book Errata. So I recommend the paper back. Errata and solutions are available form authors page on MIT. All in all a must book to read, as no other book are up-to-date and covers the subject in so much of thoroughness.

Great stand-alone text!
I'm using this book for a graduate EE course at Notre Dame, and could not be more pleased with it. Coherent, concise, and easy to follow (he does a lot of "big picture" stuff before delving into details). This is the first text I've ever read that would be understandable by itself, not to mention that all of Gallager's lectures for the accompanying course at MIT are online for free as video podcasts.

A standard setting book
This book sets the standards in digital comms. literature. The topics are treated masterly. Authors, students and engineers will benefit from studying this book. Grigore Caragacianu

One Star
This book is for a math class. Has very little to do with electronics Academics playing games.

Not the writer's fault. It is not easy reading. disappointed it was not what I thought it would be.
