Q: Is it ok to hang indoors, yet on an exterior wall that borders the outdoors? We keep furnace set to 72 during winter.

Sweetsea fish bowls are made of durable acrylic. They will work for decades normally. They are OK to use for both indoor and outdoor as long as there is proper space to mount. Also applies to all four seasons.

It comes with its own hanging hook, the helps it stay firm on the wall. I would suggest you use the hook it comes with

My husband placed a screw into a stud to hang ours. I've been rooting plants in the water it holds and always take it off to empty and refill. It came with sticky stuff but we don't use it because I didn't trust it to be secure enough. If you hang it with Command strips you'll be able to remove it easily, but again, filling with water makes it pretty heavy so do think about hanging it a bit more securely.

Q: Could I grow lettuce or something similar instead of a decorative plant?

As you see in the pics for these a Philodendron works well. The plants in the pics are examples of a real plant you can use, not the fake little plant that comes with it. Not all plants will grow well with their roots constantly in water. Go to a local nursery or consult the internet for other plants that can do well with this kind of setup.
