Does it's job
I ordered this computer after our Apple Macbook pro quit working to save money knowing a cheaper computer was smarter to get with destructive kids using it. The first week was great - no problems, worked smoothly despite my wives complaining "it's not apple and it sucks". Anyway, the J key popped off out of nowhere in the 2nd week and has been hanging by a thread ever since. It seems the keyboard hesitates to respond when typing and the keys have to be pressed or pounded on to respond and type. This computer works and looks great and does what I ordered it for - kids watching netflix, playing games and using it for school. Wife using it for pictures and other various tasks she can't do on her ipad. It's not as amazing as a mac, but it's a great alternative and significantly cheaper.I gave it a 4 star rating only because of the keyboard lag and the key popping off. My wife says she would give it a 3, but she's bitter and used to her Mac that was gifted to her and worked perfectly with zero problems.

Not bad, for the money...
I bought this unit to replace a 6 year old Acer Aspire 5740 that I have used and abused 12 hours a day, without issue. While the keyboard and screen are excellent, the processor is slower, and the speakers are cheaper than my old one. The wifi is also weaker than my old one, which allowed me to use my laptop out in the backyard with a great signal. This one has trouble streaming videos and such even in the house! After changing the power and performance settings to maximum, it is a little better, but I find myself still using my old 5740 for most tasks and watching videos, etc.I might look into seeing if I can upgrade the processor to an i3...

Good but not quite great
After a month I like the computer, particularly the huge screen. Honestly it is almost like a desktop. Startup is easy and fast, there is plenty of memory, the keyboard is comfortable. There is the problem of the mouse activating unintentionally, but an external mouse takes care of that. The reason for the 4 star instead of 5?First off, the power plug interferes with the opening/closing of the dvd player. This would have been simple to redesign--a straight plugin instead of a 90 degree angle would have done it.Second: the dvd player is very touchy. If you try to load a disk too rapidly or if you are playing too many in a row, it doesn't load correctly. Initially I thought I would have to return the computer as I couldn't get disks to play. i had to very carefully load the player and slowly close the door for it to work. As long as I take this precaution, it is working well. Not sure what the cause is, but be aware of the issue.

Replaces Windows XP Desktop
I love my new Acer Aspire V3-731 with Windows 7. I replaced my old Toshiba XP laptop and Gateway XP desktop with two Acers. I had a devil of a time setting up our new Acer Aspire 15.6" V3-571 a few weeks ago, until I removed the bloatware and disabled the finicky touch pad. To disable the touch pad simply press Fn and F7 simultaneously and install a Logitech wireless mouse. The touch pads suck on these machines and will drive you mad. A wireless mouse is imperative. It solves all of the touch pad problems. I also added Mozilla Firefox Add-Blocker and installed most of my favorite programs and bookmarks. Having learned on the V3-571, it was easy to set up the 17.3" V3-731. Four hours instead of four days. The V3-731 has asked me to install over 200 Windows 7 Updates out of the box so far. For some reason the V3-571 needed only 10-12 updates? Anyhow I love both of these Acers and they are perfect for my wife and I. We do basic stuff including email, word processing and surfing. I did buy Microsoft Home and Student 2010 for multiple computers. Both of the new Acers came with 360 which wants to charge you $99/year for one computer. That's just crazy. I'm looking forward to using these machines for a long time to come. By the way, I needed guidance from Acer on the touch pad issue and when the machine locked me out after setting up a sign-on password. The techs were easy to contact and helped me with virtually no waiting time. Think twice about using a sign-on password. Once you're locked out, you are out until you have a tech walk you through the rebooting to factory default start point again. No password for me. I learned my lesson. Bypass the screen that says set up a sign-on password. Cheers!

Just about perfect except for...
I like everything about this laptop except it has one red pixel dropout almost in the center of the monitor--which means I see it a lot--and I have to prop the back up on splints to make it more ergonomic; otherwise, the edge of the computer catches my wrists just so and makes them ache after I've been typing a while. There is also an annoying built-in popup that happens every time I want to view a photo: an advertisement/nag from Microsoft, asking if I want to install Live. Despite having turned it off in programs, it STILL pops up every single time, necessitating a denial and confirmation from me before the viewer will show me the photo. This happened even after I chose to use a different picture viewer! Bad, very bad. Acer needs to vet the programs on their computers before accepting them.If it hadn't been for these few things, I'd have rated the laptop a solid 5 stars.
