great value, will report on reliability
Frustrated by the patchy performance of the 15 year old receiver that had been driving a pair of old, but good quality speakers in my home office, I went on line and searched for "stereo receiver". I bought the Sherwood via Amazon for less than $100.00. Minor investment, major aural rewards if only it lasts a couple of years. As other reviewer have noted, it is big and it is heavy but as others have replied, how precious is your space and how often do you move a receiver once it is hooked up? So size & weight are fine with me.The sound with my speakers in a small room is more than fine. Controls are as simple and as rational as one can expect these days. Set-up took minutes and went fine. Inputs definitely spartan and in no way useful for one hoping for a home theater hub. Really just an FM tuner with RCA jacks enabling common audio components via RCA jacks (though, understandingly, nothing for an ancient phonograph input). I will use it 99% for listening to local public radio classical broadcasts and thus far the FM reception is a bit better than my 15 year old Techniques receiver. But fidelity with the old unit was never an issue. It was that the volume control and speaker connections were worn out.I'm sure that for 90% of the people who might want an old-fashioned receiver to listen to good music while reading or surfing, the sound quality delivered will be fine.So like many things these days, the issue is reliability. So I'll start with 5 stars on value and promise to update this review every six months. If something goes wrong I will report it. If not, you can identify with me, happy as a clam listening to the three B's on public radio. Now writing on April 19, 2015. Happy to report that it remains problem free. As others suggested, it being slightly heavier than the norm has never been a problem. I hasn't moved a foot since I hooked it up. I've been using it from 2 to 4 hours each afternoon to listen to classical music on what's left of the music offerings of local Boston public radio stations.

Very decent for the money
I bought two of these at the same time. Heck - they were dirt cheap.I plan on using one for my two covered deck speakers outside and the other to power two large sound reinforcement speakers in my Digital Audio Workstation. The build quality is very good for the money. The unit doesn't look cheap and has a fairly large power transformer giving it some heft. The controls are very simple and logically laid out. I didn't even need to crack open the user manual. You even get a two year warranty, however, I hope I never have to use it, as I don't think it will be easy to get it repaired. The specifications are quite good. I show 105 watts per channel/rms, however, it doesn't seem like it puts out this much power. I think this is due to the digital controlled volume knob. You have to really turn it a lot to get some volume. I think this is by design. The distortion rating is actually quite impressive for a cheap amp.The remote is cheap but works fine. I don't plan on using it very much. It's also a nice bonus I wouldn't have expected. The front push buttons are plastic and don't always have a solid feel to them. (But - what do you expect for the price?)I don't think I would purchase this as my main music listening receiver but for secondary applications, (deck speakers, secondary room speakers, kids stereo, sub woofer amp, etc.) you just can't beat it.My biggest complaint is that the bass output isn't very strong. It's not bad, but I guess I'm used to higher end amplifiers like my Denon. You really have to crank up the bass tone control to get any bass output from my speakers. I think a "loudness" control would have been a good addition with this receiver. The receiver section is quite sensitive and is easy to program. (Also a nice bonus for a less than $[...] bucks.)Overall - it's hard to beat for the price. Heck for these prices get a couple in case one breaks!

Very Good Stereo Receiver
I needed a small, basic, stereo Receiver to connect to my 46" HD TV set, and which would fit in a small cabinet with less than six inches of vertical clearance.Note the actual dimensions for this product:W x H x D: 440mm x 138mm x 332 mmW x H x D: 17-3/8 in x 5-7/16 in x 13 inI paired this receiver with two Klipsch B-3 Synergy Bookshelf Loudspeakers, and the sound is excellent for an apartment. The actual room that I am using for this setup measures 17 ft, 2 in x 12 ft.I had previously been using full size floor standing speakers, but their size did not go well with the decor of the TV set and the low profile, 13-1/2 inch high TV stand. This receiver has very low distortion and it drives the Klipsch B-3 speakers extremely well. Granted, this is not a full-featured, surround-sound A/V receiver, and therefore does lack a few common features. In particular, it lacks sub-woofer pre-out connections, digital audio inputs, a "Phono" input for LP turntables, and a "tape monitor" feature, which would be useful for connecting a graphic equalizer.I was surprised to discover that unlike many other, more expensive receivers, this one has a decent headphone amplifier built in, which is only activated when the speakers are deactivated. This receiver can drive my Sennheiser HD-580 headphones properly, which have an unusually high, 300 Ohm impedance rating. They sound better when powered by this receiver than they do when powered by some more expensive, dedicated headphone amplifiers. For the nominal price, I am very happy with this receiver.Highly recommended.
