I opened the box and instantly felt like I should be standing in front of an easel wearing a dramatic linen smock and yelling “BRING ME MORE LIGHT!” to no one. First Impressions Forty colors. FORTY. All lined up like tiny soldiers ready to help me express my emotions in a healthy way for once. You get: • Brights • Neutrals • Deep dramatic tones • Earthy “I paint landscapes and think about my past lives” colors • Metallics that make everything look expensive It’s like a whole personality palette. Using Them Thick. Creamy. Smooth like butter that just got promoted. They blend beautifully — like they actually want to work together, which is more than I can say for some adults. I mixed colors like I knew what I was doing (I didn’t), but the paints still turned out gorgeous. The pigments? SHOCKINGLY rich. Like “museum piece but I’m painting at my dining table” rich. Canvas Behavior The paint grabs onto canvas with enthusiasm. It layers, it smears, it blends — whatever mood you’re in, the paint supports it. Want soft dreamy clouds? Done. Want dramatic shadows like you’re brooding in a castle somewhere? EASY. Want to finger paint like a feral toddler? Honestly… it still looks good. I bought this set of oil paints as a beginner after a dismal failure with acrylics in attempts to mix them and get the same effects of oils on canvas. These paints made me fall in love with oils and I have definitely learned a lot in the past month and a half. The set has a great color selection for the price and even has some colors not widely available from more expensive manufacturers. Yes, they are made in China, but for the the price and color selection, these are a beginner's dream. That being said, my greatest challenge other than learning with trial and error what colors mix or blend well, was the dry time for the paints. These paints do take a bit longer to dry on their own than other oil brands I have tried since I purchased them. Of course, it also depends on what colors you use, thickness of paint, etc. However... I finally realized after much research that there are options for a gel medium that makes the oil paints dry faster when mixed properly. Gamblin makes two different alkyd gel tubes that I found are nice and easy to use. One is solvent-based which does fume a lot, and the other solvent free which is easier for chemical-sensitive individuals. And yes, they are a bit pricey at only about nine dollars less than these paints themselves, but it is worth it if you want to take things to the next level. There is also another walnut alkyd liquid medium from M. Graham which contains no solvents that I experiment with. And there is a non-toxic Res-N-Gel from Martin/F. Weber which I have not tried. There are also more solvent-based brands of drying mediums out there and various techniques. It all just depends on what works for you. I wanted to share this, because the dry time was my biggest challenge with oils. The first painting I did using this paint set without any medium added is just finally drying out completely to the touch among all the colors used after a little over a month. Whereas, the abstract paintings I did with both solvent-based and solvent-free gel were dry to the touch way sooner. Above all, just have fun and don't be discouraged if you have challenges with oil painting, because the journey to overcome them is well worth the endeavor (at least for me!). I've looked at a ton of blogs, videos, etc. Luckily, oil painting for me has become so much more than just worrying about drying time, which is fantastic! This paint set was just the beginning of my enjoyment of oil painting and I am certain it will get you where you need to be as well!

They're pretty good. Some came a little hard and had to be worked in the tube before coming out.

Tubes are a little small (which I expected), thus far, colors are nice and although the paint isn't high quality, its good enough!

I love these oil paints! The last time I painted with oil was over 10 years ago in high school. I have been using acrylics recently because as a busy mom of small children with no designated studio who likes to paint after their bedtime, it was just the most convenient thing, but wow am I so glad I bought these! They are so beautiful and have inspired me to use oil again. I’m someone who loves using color and I love the color selection it comes with! So many gorgeous colors! The quality was rich and creamy and perfect and so fun to use. If you are a beginner (or not) and even just curious about using oil paints, this is such a great kit to begin with. :) I really appreciate that it has three tubes of white as well! ;) Watch me paint exclusively with these oil paints and turpentine.
