A Great Read!!!!
Note:Book Review Written January 5, 2020The Mythology of Supernatural : The Signs and Symbols Behind the Popular TV Show, By Nathan Robert BrownKindle Edition (282 Pages)This book was written as a scholarly effort to identify the mythologies and folklore behind that used to create various monsters,, demons, angels events, and other elements present in the cable television series Supernatural. While it It is possible to read and enjoy its content without watching the series, I really don't know why you would want to. I selected this book because of an interest in mythology and folklore, which is most likely the reason I am a fan of the Supernatural series. Ever since human beings took their first steps into the dark and frightening realms of existence they have resorted to mythologies (stories) to help themselves understand and cope with the unknown. The study of these myths is fascinating because it not only tells us a great deal about our ancient ancestors, but also about ourselves. By the same token Supernatural isn’t just a show that was developed by using mythology; it is mythology. The show is not just based on mythological figures and events; it is a new kind of myth, all its own. The stories of Supernatural’s heroes are new manifestations of age-old myths, tales that have existed since the dawn of humankind. They are not just repeating the old lore or mythical archetypes, but are unique adaptations. Further, the show has developed such a broad scope that there are probably few traditional myths in existence that cannot be compared to some figure, event, relationship, or element of Supernatural. Among the subjects discussed in this book include: weapons used against monsters and evil entities; angel and demon lore; demonic possession and exorcism; heaven and hell; and much more. The author describes how the subjects are presented in the television series and than compares it to the ancient mythology and/or lore. The result is an interesting and entertaining read. Supernatural fans will love this book, while students of mythology may find it interesting, at least I did.

Highly Recommended for Supernatural Fans
As a long-time fan of the show, I've read a number of the Supernatural novels by various authors and was largely disappointed. None seemed to add any critical - or even interesting - dimension to the series, and some were horrendous reads."The Mythology of Supernatural" is different. First off, it's non-fiction. Nathan Robert Brown is a bona-fide mythologist who combines his knowledge of the Supernatural series with a knowledge of Hebrew, Christian, Celtic and even Sumerian mythology, as well as folklore, to give fans a deeper understanding, hence deeper enjoyment, of the mythology involved in the shows. His writing is often scholarly, yet always presented in an enjoyable fashion. I look forward now to re-watching episodes with more information on the signs, symbols, and weapons used in the show.Plus, if you read the book, you'll learn how to make your own holy water (you know, just in case...).

Fun Read, Decent Information
I purchased this book to write a paper for school about Supernatural and it’s relation to certain religious studies topics, and the information certainly came in handy. However, for my purposes it was lacking in some detail and source citing rather than just tossing in loose connections of things (that for some could really be made with just about any show where two brothers argue or a certain demon name is mentioned) instead of things specific to Supernatural’s interpretation or basis in reality. Either way, a solid book and I think would be a fun gift or read for any fan.

fun book to read
First off, fun book to read, and well written, very informative. I'm about halfway through, and find it difficult to put down. For that reason, I had to write this review to point out what I felt were two minor little nitpicks, and hopefully they'll be addressed in a later revision.1) In the chapter for signs and symbols, in citing the possible significance of the number 22, it states there are 22 cards in a tarot deck. Not exactly, there are actually 78. There are 22 Major Arcana cards, yes, but this ignores the remaining 56 Minor Arcana entirely.2) In the preceding chapter describing the origins of the Lucifer mythology, I was a little disappointed that it wasn't pointed out that there is in fact only one line in the entire Bible (Isaiah 14:12) relating to Lucifer, where he's not a fallen angel, not Satan, but an arrogant mortal king. Obviously the book of Enoch has a different take, and far more to say on the matter, but I thought it definitely worth a passing mention at least.http://www.keithhunt.com/Lucifer.htmlhttp://www.crivoice.org/lucifer.html

This book is a keeper!
The author has done extensive research into various folklore, mythology, and creation stories in order to explore the symbols and storyline used in this series. The exceptional amount of research, together with careful comparison to the storyline (and a bit of humor), are well worth the 5-star rating.

I enjoyed how they explained the actual mythology used in the show without picking everything apart if it wasn't used exactly as scholars believe. The author tried to show where/how the writers may have interpreted the myths a little differently without condescension. I felt like the author had real respect for the show and was a true fan as well. Some mythology explanations were more in-depth than I cared for while others I would like to know more about were a bit short. I am just amazed that the writers of the show are able to use such complex mythologies to tell their entertaining stories the way they do.

I honestly giggled at this a few times. Lets be honest it's a easy read but it's not going to tell you much new is you're a very big fan of the show or just into mythology anyway. Never the less I will read this may times in the years to come i am sure and would reccomend to people who like the show(obviously its going to be a little silly to buy it if you hate the show)
