What type of paint has been used for the inside of the box? (Does it has lead?) The smells is kind of strong and it transfers to the tissues...

I suspect the paint is a kind of enamel. With our box, I lined the bottom with a sheet of wax paper. Then, I read online how to put the tissues in, keeping the box, so the tissues don't touch the container. Take the tissue box, unfold each of the four flaps on the ends and cut them off, so that all you have left is the top and bottom of the cardboard box. Then finesse the box into the Tissue Box Cover. Keeps the tissues in order, and they don't smell like the paint.

Does anybody think these will work with pull up hand paper towels?

I have not tried paper towels. However, the opening is slightly smaller than the width of facial tissue. The tissue is very flexible and folds easily to come out through the opening. Paper towels are stiffer and perhaps larger, and as such, there could be a problem with them.

What are the interior dimensions? (the description doesn’t say whether the dimensions it gives are interior or exterior)

The dimensions are exterior and tissues must be taken out of the box or any other packaging before being placed in the holder.

can this be cleaned with alcohol wipe or soap and water?

I would recommend just a wet, then a dry cloth. If needed you could use a bit of soap and water. Alcohol wipe could eventually discolour it. Hope this helps.

Attractive.

I love this box for my desk .It’s a decorative way to keep Kleenex accessible without the cardboard box. It does not fit the size Kleenex box we get from Costco so I remove it from the cardboard and place the Kleenex in the book box and it works just fine..

Smells bad

The book box is the right size & a fun design but it stinks! It smells like varnish or something, a very strong, permeating industrial-type odor. And it stinks up the whole box of Kleenex including the tissues. Yuck. I removed the Kleenex and put the empty book box out in the garage overnight in the hope that the smell would dissipate. Instead, it stank up the whole garage. Then I tried putting outside but I could smell it across the yard. I returned it. Too bad; other than the horrible stench, I liked the box.

If I have to have a box of tissue on my desk, at least it looks good. It did smell of varnish when I first got it so I let it sit outside for a few days and it was fine. Have to use the smaller tissue boxes (like the generic ones) but that's fine by me. Achoo!!!
