The concepts were presented in this book as Black and White Decorating schemes. These concepts in black and white were just as applicable to decorating with color.There also many good general design tips in here that would help or freshen the mind of a decorator. As an individual who was considering the possibilities of black and white in my home this was exact stone weight that I needed to JUMP to the Black and White decorating scheme in my home. The book is well written and the photos are excellent. This book can be read in about 4-hours but with each multiple reading you gain more and more education. Definitely a home library book for those interested in the history of decorating, design, black, white, and the combination, and gray spaces.

Although I read many decorating books and magazines, I rarely sit down and read every single page of them. Black and White (and a Bit in Between) had interesting content on every page. I learned quite a lot about color balance and the overall effect of a pared down palette. The large number and crisp quality of the photographs made the book a joy to explore and offered inspiration for decorating my own home. I finished reading the book, but I find myself returning to it frequently. A+

I own a ton of design books and this is one of my favorites. The styles vary significantly throughout the book, but the theme is wonderfully consistent...black/white, shades of gray, or these same tones with a hint of contrasting color here and there. And the emphasis of the theme shifts from furniture to floors to paneling/architectural features to fabrics. Most importantly, the book contains great examples of truly livable real life rooms (I hate when design books show rooms that are so sterile and perfect I would be afraid to even enter the rooms being featured, never mind curling up with a book and a glass of wine somewhere in them!) This one is worth taking up an extra inch on your bookshelf. I highly recommend purchasing it.

This is such a great home decor book. It's filled with great home designs and ideas.

This book is full of examples on the use of black and white in your decor. As my home is mostly black and white, this appealed to me, and I found some useful tips. The pages and pictures are high-quality. It’s not exactly a coffee table book in that it’s a bit smaller and more instructional. I think it’s a good choice if you want a little guidance in the use of contrast, light and shadow, and the timeless elegance of black and white decor.

As a design enthusiast, and enamoured of black and white rooms for their crisp clarity and peacefulness, this book really attracted me. Most desirable of all, for me, are subtle neutrals with occasional pops or splashes of color... and they were there. These rooms are full of personal detail, collections, views, and the how-tos of melding the black, white, shades of gray and beige together, usually with tons of texture. Unlike many design books, these don't have a particular point of view, because they comprise the work of many designers. It's also interesting to view what makes a room interesting and work without recourse to color. Loved the book. Well written, too, which is important to me, and great photography.
