Art of the Wind Rises

This book is more than just a showcase of art from this wonderful movie, although it certainly is that. Included as well are production techniques, research details like aircraft types, and the full English language script! Must-have for lovers of this movie, WWII aircraft, and all things Ghibli.

As an animator who is fascinated by Miyazaki's work and already owns two other "The Art Of" books from this series, The Art of the wind Rises doesn't fail to bring the amazing concept art, finished cel art, and detail about how the movie was made, right into my hands so I can study it and learn how to better improve my own animation. Not only does this book provide key details about how the movie was pieced together and even animated, it also includes the screenplay for the entire movie. Definitely a must-have for Ghibli fans.

This is another great piece in Hayao Miyazaki's collection. It is beautifully done as all the others. It has pre sketches of all/ most of the characters, it has a lot of scene pictures that have been watercolored. And a script in the back. The layout is basically like all of his other artbooks. If you loved the movie then you'll love this book!

One of the great differences between the way Studio Ghibli works and how a movie is developed in America is that every film is born from the idea of one man. This book showcases the genius of Mr. Miyazaki in what it will probably be his last film effort, from the concept sketches to the final look of the film. Even though there is a book with more images than information about the making of "The Wind Rises", it's a must have for every Ghibli fan.

I've really enjoyed the Ghibli "Art of..." books published by Viz. I'm a cartoonist and I keep the books near my work area for quick reference. The Art of the Wind Rises is no exception, I'm glad to have it on my shelf. However, I found it lacking when compared to the others, especially the Art of Ponyo. To me the Ponyo book really set a high standard with a good balance of storyboards, preliminary work, backgrounds, composite images from the film and interviews. This book doesn't manage to find that kind of balance. First of all there are almost no storyboards, in fact I only saw one page of five storyboard drawings which is used twice, and it feels like far fewer concept sketches than previous books. For me getting to see the preliminary work is the attraction of these books, not final images from the movie. Also, some key scenes from the movie, most notably the outstanding earthquake scene, feel like they barely made it into the book. The actual earthquake only gets five images on a two page spread including one (very beautiful) background painting and four final images from the movie. The post earthquake chaos however gets several pages which is nice since there are so many great crowd shots. Maybe the lack of balance is due to the massive amount of content they had to cover? Maybe there are so few storyboards to encourage people to buy the storyboard book? With all that said, this is a big book with a lot of content. There are interviews with Yoji Takeshige, Kitaro Kosaka, Michiyo Yasuda, Atsushi Okui, Miyazaki's original project proposal, a short biography of Jiro Horikoshi and Tatsuo Hori ( Jiro in the movie is a composite of these two men) and the entire script translated from Japanese. Although the preliminary work is few and far between what is included is pretty good, including some of Miyazaki's airplane drawings. There's also an overview of the digital and photographic effects used in the movie...if you're into that kind of thing. Overall this book is an unbalanced but nice addition to the to the series. *Update - After reading the interviews I learned that Miyazaki actually only made a handful of concept drawings before they started production which explains why there aren't many in the book.*

The quality was amazing and definitely worth the money. The art styles were beautiful and the book came quicker than I expected.

I've followed Mr. Miyazaki's career for the last couple decades. My first memory of his work was in 1991 when I saw "Laputa" - a.k.a. Castel in the Sky - for the first time. I was hooked from then on.... The art of The Wind Rises captures pure human emotions, and visually depicts period costume and manners. Only Haiyo could explore the beginnings of flight in Japan and simply in visual representation, communicate the contrasts of mankind's quest for knowledge through curiosity and our thirst for power and bloodshed. This book has all the power and glory that Haiyo's art is known for. I recommend for everyone to get a copy of their own.

As expected, a great art book which describe the process behind the movie.

Unlike other books in the Studio Ghibli art series this one contains very little in the way of concept art. Other than that a good mix of background art and film stills are presented. The books gives a good representation of the film, and the full English script is contained in the back. However, what made this book stand out for me is the extent to which the text clarifies the research done by the team to ensure the period (and technology of the period) were depicted as accurately as possible. All the airplanes, locomotives, trains, ships etc. really existed (well, except for the airplane flown by Jiro in his dream in the opening scenes). Most Anime studios would draw "a locomotive". Not Ghibli, they draw a Bavarian S3/6, or a Japanese Class 9600 steam locomotive!

Hermosa edición, pasta dura, a color, texto en inglés, excelente regalo para un fan de estudio Ghibli. Imaginaba que imágenes vendrían, aparecieron más de las que esperaba, ideal para perderse por horas en cada página.

This book is the thickest one that I have in "The Art of _" series from Ghibli. Great variety of character designs, concept art, gorgeous landscapes, pretty architectural and interior art of the traditional Japanese houses. The hardcover is so sturdy, protects the pages well. The actual page is so smooth and the printing quality is perfect. Binding of the pages is flawless! The book is actually a lot bigger and heavy than I had imagined though - not that it'll be a major problem for me.

No queda mucho por decir de Miyazaki, sólo que la verdadera profesionalidad se demuestra al acabar tu carrera con una obra tan excelsa como esta. Y por este precio, es casi obligatorio disfrutarla, tanto seas o no fan de Studio Ghibli. Envío perfecto en el plazo indicado.
