Chock-full of information!
I am a Gifted & Talented Resource Teacher and bought this book to supplement my 2nd grade unit on archaeology. HANDS DOWN the best addition I purchased! The pictures are phenomenal in helping students put very new and advanced vocabulary into context. Second graders had a real grasp on what archaeologists do after listening to just this one story. It is so full of information, and yet, reads enough like a story that it's easy for students to follow. You could've heard a pin drop in my classroom while we read that book. They were hooked! I read it aloud as one of the lessons early on in the unit that exposes students to what archaeologists do. For the rest of the unit, I would just remind them of the book, or show one of the diagrams up on my document camera, and they were able to understand and synthesize new information really well! Love, love, LOVE this book! Wish it came with our curriculum in the first place!

Even interesting for adults
This book is great for kids and grown-ups. It shows kids the gridded system of a dig, and the tools archaeologists use, and how very little of their work is actually "discoveries". Their work is mostly tedious record keeping, sifting for tiny bits of material, and analysis. This book does a jaw-droppingly good job of taking such gritty details and weaving them into a real book, with a storyline and characters, and keeping the information fresh and interesting. In the end, my elementary-aged scientist got all excited about the site map. If your plans include a trip to a natural history museum, this book is a winner.

An outstanding opening into the world of archaeology
As an archaeologist with over 50 years of exploration, I looked for something to help me explain what archaeology is and what archaeologists do to my granddaughter's kindergarten class. This was the only book that came close! In fact it does a wonderful job of leading the reader (and listener) through the concepts and the reality of our work and what we do with our discoveries. I commend Kate Duke.

Fun Introduction to Archaeology for Children
I read this to my children as part of our homeschool curriculum. My students are kindergarteners and a 3rd grader. All three of them greatly enjoyed it. It is written in a style very similar to the Magic School Bus series. Like those books, there is a main body of text that can be read independently of all the little "extras" (dialog bubbles between the characters, side bars, charts, etc), or you can take the time to read all of the information presented. Either way works well in this book. The illustrations are bright and colorful, and the information is presented in a meaningful, yet easy to understand, manner. After reading this book, there is a sudden interest in archaeology in my house! This is a great, simple introduction. It is certainly not comprehensive, but it serves its purpose as an introductory text well.

Entertaining and educational.
The kids really enjoyed this book. Happily surprised they sat through the whole reading. Take your time and look into the funny dog and cat side story. They retained the information the next day and told Dad about it. Great book!

Excellent book for the VERY young to Middle School (explain you're just using it because it gives a great overview to grades 4+)
GREAT introduction to the subject!! Read it to both age groups in our enrichment program (7-9 and 10-12) and it went over well -- with both groups! I would suggest the younger kids own this text, it is very comprehensive. And if you're looking to build, "Archaeology For Kids" is a good next step.

This is a really great book that goes into detail about how archaeological digs are performed, all while making it kid friendly. I can't tell you how many times that my daughter has asked me to read this to her, and for being a technical kids book, that is really saying a lot!

I bought this for my granddaughter and know she will love it. I had a look at various archeology books for children before choosing this one. This one seemed just right for her age group 7/8 years being fun and interesting..

IT’S A CLEVER WAY TO SHOW THAT HISTORY LEAVES BEHIND CLUES, EVEN IN SOIL. • SCIENCE MEETS ADVENTURE FROM CARBON DATING TESTS TO THE METICULOUS PROCESS OF SCIENTIFIC DIGGING, THE BOOK INTRODUCES KIDS TO REAL-WORLD TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES. IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT DIGGING—IT'S ABOUT DECODING TIME. • TRASH AS TREASURE ONE OF THE MOST FASCINATING INSIGHTS IS THE IMPORTANCE OF ANCIENT GARBAGE, KNOWN AS MIDDENS. DUKE EXPLAINS HOW ARCHAEOLOGISTS TREAT THESE AS GOLDMINES OF INFORMATION, REVEALING HOW PEOPLE AND ANIMALS LIVED, ATE, AND INTERACTED. • DETECTIVES OF THE PAST CHILDREN ARE INVITED TO SEE ARCHAEOLOGISTS AS DETECTIVES—UNCOVERING TRUTHS BURIED BENEATH LAYERS OF TIME. THIS METAPHOR MAKES THE SUBJECT THRILLING AND RELATABLE. • LIFE IN THE ARCHAIC ERA THE BOOK OFFERS GLIMPSES INTO WHAT PEOPLE ATE, THE PLANTS THEY USED, AND HOW THEY SHARPENED TOOLS USING KNAPPING. THESE DETAILS HELP CHILDREN VISUALIZE ANCIENT LIFE AND UNDERSTAND THE EVOLUTION OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR. • TOOLS OF THE TRADE DUKE INTRODUCES THE TOOLS ARCHAEOLOGISTS USE—FROM BRUSHES TO TROWELS—AND EXPLAINS THEIR PURPOSE IN A WAY THAT’S BOTH INFORMATIVE AND FUN. • SKELETONS AND SENSITIVITY THE BOOK DOESN’T SHY AWAY FROM THE EMOTIONAL AND TECHNICAL CHALLENGES OF EXCAVATING SKELETONS, TEACHING KIDS THE IMPORTANCE OF RESPECT AND PRECISION IN HANDLING HUMAN HISTORY. • THE POWER OF RECORD-KEEPING FINALLY, DUKE EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF DOCUMENTING FINDINGS, SHOWING THAT ARCHAEOLOGY IS NOT JUST ABOUT DISCOVERY BUT ALSO ABOUT PRESERVING KNOWLEDGE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. THIS BOOK IS MORE THAN JUST A LESSON IN ARCHAEOLOGY—IT’S AN INVITATION TO EXPLORE, QUESTION, AND IMAGINE. IT ENCOURAGES KIDS TO THINK CRITICALLY, OBSERVE CLOSELY, AND APPRECIATE THE STORIES HIDDEN BENEATH THEIR FEET. WHETHER USED IN CLASSROOMS, COUNSELING SESSIONS, OR WEEKEND READING, ARCHAEOLOGISTS DIG FOR CLUES IS A POWERFUL TOOL TO ENGAGE CHILDREN IN MEANINGFUL LEARNING. A DELIGHTFUL AND INSIGHTFUL READ THAT TURNS DIRT INTO DISCOVERY AND CURIOSITY INTO LIFELONG LEARNING. PERFECT FOR BUDDING SCIENTISTS, HISTORY LOVERS, AND EVERY CHILD WHO’S EVER ASKED, “WHAT HAPPENED HERE LONG AGO?” SHINY AJIT

Livre très enrichissant
Mes enfants sont passionnés par l'archéologie et la façon dont se déroule les fouilles. Ce livre répond parfaitement à leur demande et leur permet de répondre à beaucoup de leurs questions. L'anglais est très facile à lire.
