8402 Angle Finder – Transfer Angles from Walls & Corners to Miter Saw. Physical Reference Jig for Crown Molding and Trim Work. Inside or Outside Corners.

Saw this on FynnDogg woodworking utube channel. Liked his review of this and got it to use with my miter saw. Like the way you can adjust to different angles, then transfer to the miter saw.

I like this tool for what it does, especially for the price. This is my fourth Milescraft tool, and I generally find them to be 80% as good and only 20% of the cost of more expensive tools. I guess I didn’t read the description carefully enough, because the 8402 works a little differently than what I was expecting. In essence, it transfers angles, it doesn’t measure angles. Compared to my digital angle finder, the 8402 has much larger flat edges lengthwise. My digital angle finder can measure down to 0.1 degree, but the long edges are only about 1/16 inch thick, making it harder to stand perpendicular to the wall surface if I'm measuring the angle between two walls. The Milescraft 8402 has much wider edges, making it easier to keep “level” as you stand it vertically against the wall. It also bisects the angle with the flat yellow piece, and you can use that flat edge to guide a miter saw’s blade angle to cut an angle exactly half. And that’s what I am going to use it for. If I were making miter saw cuts requiring both bevel and miter angles on the same cut (cutting crown molding “flat”), this tool would not work because the miter saw angles are derived from both the wall angle and the molding “spring” angle, and that requires an actual number measurement on the wall angle. Although, I could still do it by “finding” the angle with the 8402 and then using my digital tool to measure the angle on the outside of the 8402.

I wish I had this tool available long ago. This simple jig allows you to make precise miter cuts on baseboards and more. It is very easy to use and nearly fool proof. They only drawback is that the latch doesn't secure the jig as well expected. If you are not careful you can knock it out of alignment. However, if you tighten the nut on top.of the latch you can minimize the movement.

What a good idea works when the brain doesn’t

If you need to transfer angles from a wall or work piece to your miter saw to recreate it in some molding or something this is perfect. If you want to figure out an angle and get a reading to do something else with that number, (as it seems many people thought that is what this did), you don't want this. The locking mechanism works just fine, when used as it was meant to be you don't really need much in the way of a lock. You should not be applying any pressure to either of the wings after you take your measurement. Lock it and take it to the saw, plop it down against the fence and move the blade so it touches the yellow blade stop, remove it, make your cut, marvel in how easy that was. That's it, nothing fancy, not meant to give you your angle in degrees or lock and hold your weight as you bounce up and down on it...
