Marineland Magniflow 400 GPH Canister Aquarium Filter

OK. This is a long review but it's 100% an honest one. I've never used a canister filter before, and honestly was really only getting this one as a hail Mary because I didn't know what else to do. A few weeks before my decision to buy this canister filter, my 75 gallon gold fish tank with 8 gold fish (none really very big) that had been up and going fine for 3 years crashed. To this day I don't know what happened-i came home to find my fish floating on their sides and gasping and their water was near the consistency of foam. I've never seen anything like this and I've got dozens of tanks and types of fish and have had fish for years. I lost all except for my black moor and one gold fish. I downgraded them to a 36 gallon (and got the other 3 smaller fish in the pics as their new roomies) and had their tank set up for 2 months. Water tests were fine but my water was frustratingly not clear like all my other tanks. Then my ammonia levels started getting ridiculous. I decided to try to get this canister filter, figuring if it didn't work, I'd literally tried all that me, my husband, 2 FB groups, and my local ma and pa pet supply shop could think of. I'd never had a canister filter before and didn't wanna buy a really expensive one for my first one because, to be honest, I was 100% sure I was throwing away my money. I watched a couple YouTube videos to get the gist of what I was doing. I filled the canister up with water from my tank, then added new water as a water change to my fish, primed it and got it running. Honestly for the first few days I was unimpressed. The same cloudy was visible, and we were not really seeing a difference but I figured I'd give it a bit and see. Wow. Wish I'd taken a before picture now. Before, you couldn't see halfway to the back of the tank---now, it's like crystal clear and sparkling! My water tests are perfect and my fish are definitely more active and happier. I'm not saying I'm gonna replace my aquaclear filters-which are tried and true and doing great one every other tank I have, but I am definitely saying that this filter not only exceeded my expectations, but has also greatly improved the health of my fish. I also want to say, I only really had -and honestly probably still have- just the most basic of ideas of how canister filters worked and I got this thing up and running entirely on my own in under 40 minutes. Yeah I had to pump that button to where I thought my arms were gonna fall off but take a hint: put water from your tank in it to get it started! I don't know that I'd put this on a huge tank but for my 36 bowfront and 5 fancy goldies it's doing incredible and was well worth the risk and time and money!

Wow, I had the same brand water filter for my 55 gallon fish aquarium. It was twice the size of this one lasted me 10 years. I bought this one is half the size for up to 55 gallons but it works great. Saved a lot of money. I’m liking that there’s not quite as much pressure pushing all my plants over, etc. so if you have a 55 gallon tank, don’t buy a filter that’s for larger tanks. You just don’t need them with this brand. Very happy with it would recommend.

Update Review: I changed my review from 4 stars to 1 star because my Magniflow 360 still leaks and Marineland doesn't seem to actually want to help me resolve this, despite me being patient. Here is a timeline of what's happened: 1. I ordered the Magniflow 360 on August 15th, it arrived on August 17th, and I tried to hook it up on August 18th, when I discovered the leak. I tried adding silicone grease to the gasket, as others have suggested, and it didn't work. 2. On August 19th, I called Marineland for advice and they concluded that they should send me a new gasket. 3. On September 2nd, I didn't have the gasket, so I emailed their customer service rep to ask her about it and patiently waited for her to respond. 4. On September 12th, I called their support again because I hadn't heard anything. That rep said he saw me in the system, but it looked like the first rep hadn't taken any action on it. They were out of gaskets, so he sent me a new one. 5. On September 16th, I received the new unit and hooked it up on the 18th. That one also leaked badly. 6. I emailed the rep to let him know and to ask him if I could just get a refund. The Amazon return policy expired on the September 16th, so I couldn't return it to Amazon. He didn't respond to my email, though. 7. Today (September 23rd), I called customer service again. The person I spoke with said they don't do refunds or credits except in exceptional circumstances and it's up to me to get it working. He also suggested that I didn't hook it up according to the engineering specifications which are: a. The inflow/outflow must be < 12" apart (mine are 13.5" in a 105 hex) b. The tubes must be the same length (mine are 1/2" different in length) c. There shouldn't more than 2" of slack (mine has about 4" of slack) I'm going to try to call them again on Monday (when the customer service manager is back) to see if that person can help me out. Right now, I feel like I burned $145.00 and their customer service reps don't seem to acknowledge that this product is faulty (just see all of the other reviews complaining about leaks). Original Review: I have bought all three of these filters (160, 220, and 360) for three different tanks. Overall, they are pretty good with some flaws: 1. Good filter media included. 2. Easy to prime. 3. Fairly quiet. Some flaws: 1. The tubing is too rigid. The rigidity of the tubes makes the outflow, in particular, difficult to place with the suction cup. 2. My 220 produces a lot of microbubbles. I had to re-attached the tubing a few times to get it to stop doing that. 3. My 360 has a serious leak. It leaks a few gallons per hour and the leaks come from under the handles. I called Marineland and they are sending me a new gasket. I'll update this review once I get it.

I inherited a tank from a friend's Widow who couldn't keep up with the aquarium after my friend's passing. The aquarium was horrible and it took me 3 months of constant water changes, cleaning, and gravel washings to get the aquarium environment healthy enough and stable enough for fish to not only survive in it, but thrive. No matter what I did the aquarium was always cloudy with the old filter. When I changed to the Magniflow 360 the water cleared up within 24 hours and has remained that way ever since with the exception of a short period of time where I included Sera Superpete in the filter media to help bring the PH levels down and get the GH under control. Even then, despite the slight yellow-brown tea color staining, the water was crystal clear. In fact so clear, that if it weren't for the aeration system you wouldn't be able to tell there was water in the aquarium. Even looking through the side of the aquarium, end to end, the water is still so clear that the current from the outflow and the aeration system are the only things that give away there is water in the aquarium. You still have to do regular cleanings of the gravel, glass and filter, but instead of having to do it every 3-4 days, I do water changes every two weeks and clean the filter once a month. The water is amazingly clear and the fish are thriving. I keep 1 Comet Gold Fish, 1 Plecostomus, 5 Black Skirt Tetras, 12 Cardinal Tetras, and 4 Wag Swordtails. I wouldn't think of it as fix all, but it is fantastic at doing what filters are supposed to do. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good filter. While it is more of a process than a biowheel filter, its still relatively easy to maintain and if you love fish as much as I do, its very much worth the extra effort. I love the versatility of media that can be used in the filter as well. Very easily adaptable depending on the needs of your aquarium. If you don't have one of these, you really need to get one.

This was my first time using an external filter for my aquarium, and I did some research into these units before deciding on this one. I can from hang on the back filters, but they didn’t seem like they had the power to really cleanup the water. So rather than getting a bigger hang on the back unit, I decided to try a canister filter. It was easy to setup, but just as many reviewers stated, the plastic clamps provided are absolute garbage. When clamped down all the way, the clamps are still loose enough to slide around on the hose. I decided to try it anyways as is, and sure enough, it leaked on the outlet connection. Do yourself a favor and get metal hose clamps from Home Depot first while you are setting up. They are less than $1 each. Another thing I found difficult was priming the unit. I followed the instructions, and kept pressing the priming button, but the inlet hose just wouldn’t fill up and flow. I had to manually siphon from the outlet to start the flow. But once the unit was filled and primed, I plugged it in and it worked well. It’s very quiet compared to the hang on the back filters that I am used to. I will try this unit out for a month or two, see how it goes, but after a few hours I can tell that it is much cleaner inside my tank than it ever was with my old filter. If this filter does well, I will definitely pick up a second one for my other tank

This is a nice sized low cost under the tank filter. After running just a day or two the tank looks significantly cleaner than with the previous top mount filter. It is super quiet and has a great flow for the tank which not only helps keep the tank cleaner but is healthier for the fish to have a slight current. My only two complaints: The tank mounting tubes are really flimsy plastic and the discharge in particular has a single outside tank suction cup to hold it on. This was a problem for my tank as I had a back screen I had to cut thru to allow it to reach the glass. Second complaint is that it uses these small replaceable carbon bags. If it wasn't for these the entire filter element would last 3+ months and would be washable/ renewable, especially with a plant-fish in the tank. I know carbon filters make it look good right away because there is no biosystem that needs to build up. I am trying to figure out a way to design them out with a different filter element. With regard to the element packing inside the filter each media has its own shelf, it's very clever and easy to work with, gives a lot of options for media (which don't seem utilized) Edit: In response to the manufacture reply to my comments and a little more time with the filter I will make a correction here. First: Many people have visited my home and noticed how quiet this filter is and how clear the tank is. It is that big of a difference compared to a top mount. I appreciate the response of the manufacture to offer an additional suction cup to the discharge to give me more confidence I won't come home from a trip to an empty tank :-) My first reaction to the carbon bags was not great, but this filter does offer a great deal of flexibility for what to put in the media trays so pretty much any filter bag you buy at a pet store , or in my case if I want to go with non-activated charcoal is possible. With those corrections I am totally happy with this tank and give it a 5 star, now including customer service.

Con - no o-ring , seal , gasket. Whichever name you have for it. It didn’t come with it. I’d like to mention it’s also my fault because I purchased it “ like new “. Now the pro’s. I will say this off the back. DO NOT PURCHASE “ LIKE NEW “. Because 9/10 it will be missing that seal. Marineland doesn’t seal it anymore. Because it’s discontinued. So keep that in mind. Okay despite all of that. I LOVE THIS CANISTER FILTER. I managed to find a seal that fit and leak-free!. For the money you get a lot of filtration. I had two Marineland HOB filters. And a sponge filter. Probably a bit much for a 40 gallon breeder. But now with just the ML 220. Water is crystal clear. Filter is very quiet. It does make a whooshing sound. But it might be. Because I installed a spray bar. Which is from Fluval. This canister was easy to install. Size is great and just looks great. I highly recommended it. I’m very pleased. No leaks, like people claim that it leaks.

I don't normally write reviews so the fact that I am means it was either really good or really bad. I love this canister filter! I used to use those older style ones. I ran 2 of those (75 gallon each) on a 60 gallon tank. My tank was always nasty. I spent 5 hours cleaning my tank out every 2 months. I have been running this canister filter since July 2019 in my new 65 gallon tank. It is nearly February 2020 and I have yet to need to clean the tank and it still does not show any need to. I do clean the canister filter monthly and only change the filter bags, but I change everything else every 2 months. Super easy to clean! I have the canister concealed in the cabinet under the tank and only when I walk right by it can I hear it. I don't think it is loud. Cons: I wish the input/output filter that goes inside the tank was longer and went farther down into the water. Also, the instructions do not tell you to put in the seal when putting it together. Water sprayed out the top of the canister the first 2 times I tried it before the hubby figured it out. He put in the seal and all was fine.

I have purchased the Magnaflow canister filter after a great research! I replaced my two HOB filters on my 50 gallon African Chiclid tank. It is so quite I have to check it a couple of times to see if it is running! 😅 My African Cichlids and live plants are very happy and the water is very clear! The initial setup was a breeze! Very satisfied with my purchased and it arrived in a couple of days from the seller! Hope this helps with your choice! Arnaldo 🤛🏾
