1. After filling the clean water tank, hold it upside down to ensure it does not drip. If it does, make sure you screw on the clean water cap correctly. (It's easy to misthread.) If it still leaks, replace the cap (it's only like $5). 2. Ensure you seat the dirty water tank onto the unit well, and be sure you **close the top flap**. 3. Check the black gasket / seal under the dirty tank. You may need to reseat, tighten, clean, or replace it. 4. Check to make sure none of the water pathways and rubber seals (those you can get to by easily / removing a few screws) has gotten clogged or crusted with soap scum. Clean as necessary. 5. Q: Can the tanks be open for easy cleaning?

So it’s not easy, but I found the only way I could clean it was to drop 2 bean shaped bottle cleaning sponges with some water and cover the open top with my hand and shake out around. Then empty. You will have to use your fingers or chopsticks to get the two sponges back out but that was the only way I could get it clean. Vinegar did not work on it. Q: Does this machine extract the water during the cycle?

Yes, to a good degree. We like it a bit dryer, so we use the hose attachment (with the brush) to pull up more water. Pressing down you can actually watch the water go up the brush attachment into the hose. One other thing we do is when we are done, we put a little water in a bowl, of if close enough to a sink, water in the sink and then allow the vacuum to suck up clean water through the hose. Probably not an absolute necessity, but we like the idea of flushing out the hose with water before putting it away.

Q: Does Bissell Spotbot clean urine that is beneath the carpet surface that can lead to long term health risk/oders

We have an older model. I put it on an OLD stain. It's amazing how well it cleaned the carpet. I do not know how well it cleaned the underlying carpet pad.
