The Right Stuff is the American story of Project Mercury and the American attempt at space flight. Gagarin: First In Space is an equally interesting look and the cosmonaut corp, their trials and training, (compared to the American equivalent, NASA) and how the Soviets, with a little luck, put in the first man into space and brought him back safely to the Earth. A must see for anyone with remote interest in space.

I have to agree with everyone else regarding the subtitles. They are so twitchy they might as well have been dragged through a Russian-Portuguese dictionary before they got to English. That makes it difficult to watch, to say the least. Nevertheless, it's a good film but so utterly Soviet it could be a propaganda film. Gagarin really wasn't the first in space, Vladimir Komarov was but since he came a cropper, the task fell to this highly photogenic figurehead. Gagarin's story is sad in and of itself.Great special effects, slight story, terrible subtitles. Make up your own mind about it, if you decide to watch it.

I am very disappointed with the English subtitles of this film. I thought the film itself was really good but it was very difficult to follow along as I am not a Russian speaker. It looks like the English subtitles were generated with a computer translator and it made it a chore to follow the dialogue. At times there were even typos. As much as I am fascinated with the subject matter, I had to take a break in the middle because I was simply exhausted from reading the subtitles. I think if you loved Apollo 13 and The Right Stuff then you will stick it out like me. However, if you're not into space, then I can guarantee you will quickly loose interest because of the terrible subtitles. This is not just a Russian accomplishment but an accomplishment for all humanity. Even Gagarin's speech at the end is addressed to not only the Russian people but to all people of the earth. I just wish the producers of this DVD would acknowledge that and put more care and energy for the English speakers of the world.

Gagarin, First in Space gives the viewer a look into the early Soviet space program that hasn't been offered before. The movie shows the human side of the cismonauts, how they were selected and the imlact they had on history. Overall, an excellent high budget movie,

If not for the pseudo-English subtitles obviously provided by ourfriends in the former USSR, I'd have had to brush up on my Russian.Quite possibly a semi-true story.
