Fleabag: The Scriptures

I'm a little nervous about Phoebe Waller-Bridge co-starring in the new Indiana Jones movie. I hope this comedic genius isn't going to sell out for fame and fortune, but we'll always have Fleabag, clearly the best comedy series of the last decade. The proof is in this incredible collection of scripts from the 12 episodes spanning both seasons. Fleabag is reminiscent of that other classic British comedy Fawlty Towers--two seasons and they were done. The comedy, the pathos, are all in fine display here. The writing sings and soars and never disappoints.One minor quibble--the Amazon listing promised script "notes" from PWB. In truth, those notes turn out to be a short epilogue sharing the evolution of Fleabag and thanking people who helped along the way. Was hoping for more insight into the writing process. But it is a minor reservation.All hail Fleabag!

I had no intention of buying this originally. Actually, I was patiently waiting for a third season to come out. I figured with the pandemic maybe things were just pushed back. However, I finally looked up when an expected date for season 3 would be only to find that there would never be a season 3. With that search I also found that there was a book and I had to have it. It's actually great to read even though I know what's going to happen. In fact, I love that I can play a scene in my head over and over and I don't have to find my perpetually missing TV remote.Alright, so I'd like to add to the discourse in the reviews. Like many others have experienced, my book came a little dirty. I cleaned off whatever it was easily and now it looks like a brand new book.While it was shipping, I looked up the book to see what it looked like at other places online, in-store, and even watched a book launch from late 2019 and thus concluded that the book is NOT in fact supposed to be dirty as a clever joke or nod to the show or writer. It's just whoever, wherever these books are coming from isn't the most rigid with quality control. That or clean is chic to them. And chic is boring. Don't tell the French.Regardless, thanks to the reviews being honest about how theirs came to them and I'm very happy with my purchase.

Come on people! It’s funny. A cover with greasy looking smudges is hilarious! It’s irreverent just like Fleabag herself. In fact, if you look up the British definition of fleabag it’s “a dirty or unkempt person”. Absolutely genius. So don’t send the book back hoping for a ‘clean’ copy, this is part of the fleabag charm.As for the book itself, it’s the filming scripts of the two series including commentary from Phoebe Waller-Bridge.If you love the Fleabag series, as I do, you’ll love this. It’s great to have the text of the episodes and even though you know what happens, you can’t put it down.

Having loved the show, I was immensely excited to get my hands on this book and it did not disappoint! I loved reading the scripts for the episodes and getting to see the source text for the brilliance of Fleabag as a show. The notes at the back were also wonderful and added some great insight to the work and to the team involved. The book itself is gorgeous and I loved the tiny details of the guinea pig graphics and even the fake smudges on the outside. It's fantastic and I'm so happy to have it on my shelf!

Screenplays are a genre all on their own. This is also a popular Netflix series. Good choice to add to your library.

All those smudges on the covers so many seem to be complaining about are Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s joke on you. The fact is all the books were intentionally printed that way with what look like lubed fingerprints and other stains on them. It’s not that the cover of the book you received was smudged — it’s that all of the book covers are smudged, identically and intentionally. Imagine Fleabag reading a holy book while she has KY lubricating jelly on her hands, and you get the picture of what she was going for. Between the intentionally smudged covers, the scripts are fabulous.

It's totally intentional. The greasy marks and fingerprints and stains are calculated, all part of the Fleabag story. If you love Fleabag, you will appreciate this insider publishing tidbit even more. Brilliant inside and out. Turns out you can tell a book by its cover.
