If i purchase this amplifier will i require a dc block with the airnav flightstick, powering the amplifier with usb "external power" (no bias tee)

I would say yes, Airspy R2 wants one and yours is broadly similar

May need dc block when using usb.. does that mean it (cool!) adds bias-tee?

I used it with USB and never need led a dc block. It wont add bias-tee, only the sdr sticks do

Doesnt rtl-sdr already have 40 db variable gain, how does this differ?

Hi! The noise figure of a system is dominated by the first LNA in a chain. This LNA has a noise figure well under 1dB, while an RTL-SDR has a noise figure above 6dB. This is a massive difference and so this LNA would give you a much better SNR while still allowing you to increase the overall gain even further with the built in LNA of the RTL-SDR.
