About how many stumps (6" diameter) will one container treat?

It depends on the hole you drill. I drilled fifty 1/2inch holes in a 30 inch stump. I used 3/4 of the bottle to fill the holes.

Is this only for dead stumps or will it also kill a stump?

It can do both, all it does is speed up decomposition of the stump.

I have a copy cat kfc recipe and it calls for a few grams of saltpeter which is potassium nitrate which is what this is supposed to be. anyone use it

For Christ's sake, just order some food grade saltpeter. It's like four bucks a pound. Don't put friggin stump remover in your food. This product (which, again, is STUMP REMOVER... for burning out tree stumps, not for eating) is NOT labeled "food grade," and may contain impurities.
